Student Report About Insects

(1) Other insects do not blend in with their environment, but they still have fascinating disguises. The tails of swallowtail butterfly wings can be mistaken for antennae, and the red and blue spots can be mistaken for eyes. This makes it hard for other creatures to predict which way the swallowtail butterfly will go when it moves, allowing it to fly away quickly.

Most people are aware of the insects that blend in with their environment to avoid unwanted attention. For example, the walking stick appears to be an ordinary twig. Some insects are shaped like leaves. These insects are usually green or light brown and often look like a cluster of several leaves of different sizes.

(2) Many insects wear a natural camouflage that helps them to hide from predators. Without this camouflage, these creatures might not survive.

(3) Some kinds of moths are disguised to look like completely different creatures. Clearwing moths resemble bees. Clearwing moths can hover in flight, and they make a buzzing sound by beating their clear wings very quickly. The hummingbird clearwing moth has a two-inch wingspan and is often mistaken for a hummingbird. The slightly smaller snowberry clearwing moth has black and yellow bands of color on its body, often causing it to be mistaken for a bumblebee.

(5) Some insects are disguised to look more dangerous than they really are. Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars act the part of the creature they look like. These caterpillars have big, yellow dummy “eyes” on their backs. When one of these caterpillars is hidden in leaves, it looks very much like a small snake. Even though it is not a snake, its appearance is deceiving. When the caterpillar is annoyed by a predator, it will rise up and pose like a snake that is about to strike.

(4) These are just a few of the many different kinds of disguises in the insect world. There are many more insects to explore and to learn about!

4. Paragraph 1 is incorrectly placed in the report. Where should it be moved?

A after Paragraph 5

B after Paragraph 2[LH4]

Females and Football

(1) Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved kicking the football as high and as far as I could. The more I practiced, the better I became at kicking field goals. Each of my brothers went on to play football for both West Middle School and West High School. I hope to do the same. I would be honored to be the first female to play football for West Middle School. However, the one obstacle standing in the way of my being part of the school’s only football team is that I am a girl.

(2) Most people have had someone tell them that they could not do something before seeing what their abilities really were. I have, and I am here to share some information with you and to ask you for your help. My name is Evelyn Foster, and it has always been my dream to play football for a school team.

(3) I have been told that my trying out for the boys’ football team would upset the rest of the student body. I am here today to ask you to listen to my request and to please sign a petition that would allow me to try out for the boys’ football team.

(4) According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, about 700 girls in the United States play football each year. This was made possible in 1972, when Congress passed Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act. Title IX was created to ensure fairness to public elementary, middle, and high school students. Chapter 38 of the law was written to protect students from discrimination based on gender or blindness. There are also other laws that help people who play sports. Any school that uses federal money is not allowed to discriminate against people based on these characteristics.

(5) Since our school uses government money, I believe that our school risks breaking the law if it remains impermissible for girls to try out for the boys’ football team. Some of you may think that football is too dangerous for girls to play. At the middle school level, this is simply untrue. From late elementary school through early high school, girls are often taller than boys.

Uphill Skiing Gains Traction in Colorado
By Marci Krivonen for NPR Morning Edition

(1) It's spring break season and families and college students are heading to Colorado's ski resorts[LH10]. You've heard of downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, but a growing trend in these areas involves people skiing uphill. It's midday in Aspen, Colo., and uphill skier Chris Lane is on a break from work at a nonprofit. He clicks into his ski bindings and begins his 1,600 vertical foot journey uphill — on skis.

(2) He's going against downhill traffic, so he stays on the side of the ski run. "We've always gone one of two ways — either this route. Or, we just go straight up," Lane says, referring to the steeper and more physically demanding path. "When you go straight up it wears your legs out faster, but I like that because I like the work out."

(3) Like cross-country skis, Lane's boots attach to the binding at the toe so his heels are free for climbing[LH11]. Synthetic fur "skins" attached to the bottom of his skis provide traction on the snow. In the winter, Lane stops going to the gym, opting for this outdoor workout instead. Normally, he's out before the sun's up, sliding his skis up groomed trails. "It's almost relaxing," he says. "When I go up in the mornings in the dark, sometimes I'll close my eyes for like a minute and just go uphill with my eyes closed ... and it just feels so good."

(4) Aspen mayor Steve Skadron has his ski boots on at his desk. He wants to capitalize on his sport[LH12] and bring mountain culture back to downtown. "I skin, I uphill, participate in this hiking up the mountain," Skadron says. He worries the town's become too upscale, like Beverly Hills and Manhattan. "We have many high-end retailers here like Prada and Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino. And I'm grateful for their commitment to Aspen. I want to ensure that our downtown mix isn't simply like every other high-end shopping mall."

(5) It's a growing sector of the ski industry, especially among women. Snowsports Industries America reports sales of lightweight skis used in uphill skiing jumped more than 200 percent in one year. Kelly[LH13] Davis, research director for the trade group, says, "If it catches on in mountain towns, I think more resorts will open up to it and word will get out. I think we can expect to see more growth in this particular category."

(6) Still, the number of uphill skiers pales in comparison to the 11 million Americans who downhill ski. And, half of all ski resorts in the U.S. don't allow uphill skiing. For some, it's a safety issue. Back on the mountain, uphill skier Chris Lane continues his ascent. "I even like the sound," he says. "The hypnotic, kind of metronome sound of the skis — click, click, click. I love that." The climb is tough but nothing new for Lane. He huffs and puffs his way uphill on skis four times a week[LH14].

9. Choose the sentence that would best conclude paragraph 4.
A. Stores like Dolce and Gabbana bring in massive income for Aspen.
B. The mayor is athletic and enjoys the challenge of uphill skiing.
C. Aspen’s mayor is worried that designer stores are taking over Aspen.
D. He's working to attract companies to town that specialize in uphill skiing[LH15].

10. Which sentence, if added, would best support the ideas presented in the third paragraph?
A. Uphill skiing is best done in the mornings.
B. Lane finds uphill skiing nearly relaxing and a tough workout[LH16].
C. Uphill skiing is more favorable than downhill skiing because is causes skiers to calm down.
D. Fur “skins” are the only way to gain traction when uphill skiing.

11. Choose the sentence that would best conclude paragraph 5.
A. Women are motivated to take over the uphill skiing industry.
B. The ski industry is very popular because companies can make large profits.
C. Lightweight skis will be the only version of popular skiing in just a few short years.
D. Uphill skiing is a growing industry that may be attractive to companies in the ski industry[LH17].

Sample Paragraph and Works Cited

There are three men who influenced Spain’s history, First is Pablo Picasso. He “created a style of painting called cubism, which presented a new reality. Cubism strongly influenced 20th-century sculpture and architecture” (Cooker Carpentiere 46). Also, he created Guernica, a painting to protest the civil war in Spain, and a museum was created in his honor in Malaga, Spain (Cooker Carpentiere 46). These examples show that Picasso was an influential person from Spain’s history, especially concerning art. Secondly, Christopher Columbus was important to Spain’s history. For example, he is the focus of a debate and research about where he is buried--he has a tomb in Spain and Dominican Republic (Boubion 33). Additionally, “Columbus' legacy is a mixed one. He has been credited for opening up the Americas to European colonization as well as blamed for the destruction of the native peoples of the islands he explored” (“Christopher Columbus”). The current debate and his legacy prove that he had an impact on Spain and the world. Finally, El Cid is a famous man from Spain’s history books. For example, he fought both “against the Moors and for them as a mercenary (someone who fights for pay rather than for a cause)” (Lannon 32). This means that he fought against the Moors until the king/leader turned against El Cid, and he is notable because of his strength and bravery. Overall, Pablo Picasso, Christopher Columbus, and El Cid had an impact on Spain’s history.
