Funding Application Guidelines for the Climate Research Centre Pool

The Climate Research Centre in Greenland is now soliciting applications for funding of research projects relating to Greenland and concerned with expected impacts of climate change on Arctic marine, limnic, and terrestrial environments, and on Greenlandic society – including adaptation and prevention strategies.

The Climate Research Centre wishes to focus especially on relations between climate, ice (sea ice, glaciers, permafrost), sea and society.

An amount of DKK 10.6 M is available for the period 1 May 2011 – 31 October 2012,provided the Danish State budget 2011 is approved.

Applications cannot exceed DKK 1.0 M.

The Climate Research Centre in Greenland is attached to the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (see and has a core staff consisting of a Head of Centre and an administrative department. In addition, a social science unit will be established at Ilisimatusarfik/University of Greenland. Projects funded by this pool are expected to contribute towards establishing a research environment in Nuuk.

Applications will be assessed from an overall perspective based on the following elements:

  • The applicant’s professional qualifications.
  • An overall assessment of the scientific quality of the project.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration.
  • International research relations.

Please enclose the following four appendices in the order indicated:

A. Project description, maximum 3 A4 pages, including the following information: The purpose of the project, expected results, methods, dissemination plan, and time schedule.

B. Brief CV (maximum one page) of the person scientifically responsible.

C. Publication list including the applicant’s primary publications, request for reprints may follow.

D. Detailed budget for the project period.

Applications must be submitted signed in PDF format(application form and all appendices in one file), attached to an email to or submitted as one signed hard copy, with the application form as the front page, with no cover and no staples.

Re 1. If the applicant is an institute or institution, please indicate the institute/institution as well as the person accountable to the Climate Research Centre.

Re 2.Indicate name and address and of the institution that will be managing the grant.

Re 4. Amount requested from the Climate Research Centre for 2011-2012.

Re 6.Expected funding requirement of the project, in addition to the amount indicated, in 2011-2012.

Re 8.Please indicate information on scientific and non-scientific personnel involved in the work encompassed by this application. For workers for whom salaries are being sought please indicate areas of work or responsibilities within the project. It is expected that the Climate Research Centre in Nuuk will be the focus of the projects, and that sufficient time is spent at the Centre to ensure coordination between other projects/activities at the Centre. Details of the expected stay(s) at the Climate Research Centre will be agreed upon with the individual project holders.

Re 9. Budget items must be specified in section 9 of the form, and supplemented with a more specific description in section 10, as well as appendix D, Detailed budget. Grant recipients may not rearrange the items of the budget, unless approved by the Climate Research Centre. The total budget, including overhead cannot exceed DKK 1.0 M.

Re 9.1. When applying for salaries, please indicate (either in section 8 or in an enclosed detailed budget), which hourly or monthly rate was used to budget salaries expense.

Re 9.2.This item must include budgeted expenses for transportation as well as accommodations. Please note that funding is not available for per diem allowances or provisioning.

Re 9.3.Other budget items to be specified in section 10.

Re 9.4.Overhead funds for the Climate Research Centre are calculated as 20% of the direct costs to institutions in Greenland and 44% to Danish institutions.

Re 11.The brief project description in this section will be included in the project database of the Climate Research Centre and KVUG and will be made public at if full or partial support is granted.
