DML Study Abroad Scholarship – 2013-14

Scholarships

Scholarships may be up to $500 for any Department of Modern Languages sponsored faculty-led study abroad program for 5 weeks or more. The award will be issued directly to the student by direct deposit or by check through the Office of Financial Aid. Students who are applying for a study abroad program sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages anytime during the current academic year (including summer) must apply for the scholarship by the chosen program’s deadline.

A committee consisting of the program director and one other faculty member will determine the number and amount of awards within each program. This is a competitive award and not every applicant will be successful. All awards will then be reviewed by the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages.
Eligibility

·  Ohio University undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing

·  Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2

·  Students must be applying for a faculty-led study abroad program sponsored by the DML

Enrollment requirements

·  Students are required to be enrolled in at least the minimum credit hours required by the program

The following factors will be considered in selecting a recipient:

·  Demonstrated interest in chosen country (e.g. coursework, extracurricular activities, outreach)

·  Merit (GPA, references provided in support of your program application, CV or résumé)

·  A copy of your DARS report or a transcript from Ohio University submitted in support of your program application

·  Personal suitability (e.g. maturity, cultural sensitivity, responsibility)

Complete applications include:

·  A completed application form

·  An essay, in English, explaining your interest in the chosen country and its language, the education abroad program you have selected, and why you have chosen that program. If you have previously studied, worked or lived abroad, please provide a brief description of the experience or program(s). You should also explain how you plan to use the language in your future or future career. This essay should be double-spaced and two-to-three pages long.
