Roughly 10,000 baby boomers turn age 65 every day and about 10,000 more will cross that threshold each day over the next decade. This vast population that is moving into midlife and beyond represents a powerful source of talent, wisdom and skills. Many of them are ready to leverage their decades of experience in their chosen fields by committing to an “encore” experience that will benefit society. To tap this resource, The Dayton Foundation launched the Del Mar Encore Fellows Initiative in 2016, thanks to a $1 million gift from Del Mar Healthcare and its DMH-Fund of The Dayton Foundation. This three-year pilot program is focused on connectingsenior adults in both leadership Fellow roles and as volunteers to tackle community projects addressing social issues, such as poverty, health, education or human services.
How Does the Del Mar Encore Fellows Initiative Operate?
Through a proposal process, The
Dayton Foundation will select five
nonprofit organizations to host a
Del MarEncore Fellow who will be
charged with advancing the organi-
zation’s selected mission-focused initiative. The Dayton Foundation is responsible for the recruitment and hiring of the Del Mar Encore Fellow, acting as an intermediary to ensure that each organization is matched with an individual who has the requiredskillsto be successful.
Each nonprofit is responsible for clearly defining Fellowship roles and responsibilities and must be committed to further engaging “encore” talent as volunteers of their organization. The Del Mar Encore Fellowsare charged with integrating these senior adult volunteers in completing the stated goals and objectives. Volunteers receive no compensation from The Dayton Foundation and are the responsibility of the sponsor organization.
Del MarEncore Fellows are contract
employees of The Dayton Foundation.
Fellows are housed at the nonprofits’ facilities, work a part-time schedule
(20-32 hours/week), and complete time-limited assignments (one year renewable contract, up to three years). The Dayton Foundation provides each Del MarEncore Fellow with an annual stipend of $25,000 and a budget of $10,000.
