Workbook 2(i)Subject-Verb Agreement/Verb TenseSection 1

Part A – Guidelines

Level 1

This workbook will help you in working towards the following literacy skills:

Rs/L1.1-use explicit and implicit grammatical knowledge along with their

own knowledge and experience to predict meaning, try out

plausible meanings and to read and check for sense.

Ws/L1.1-write in complete sentences.

Ws/L1.2-use correct grammar.

What is this workbook about?

It is about:

-understanding that all sentences have a pattern but not always the same pattern and that certain patterns are used more often than others.

-recognising and using those patterns to help to predict meaning.

Do not worry about the size of the workbook. You may not need to work through all the exercises.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

-to recognise and use different sentence patterns;

(e.g. those used in a form, a personal letter, a business letter or a menu.)

-to use the way a sentence is written and your own experience to predict the meaning of words within it;

(e.g. in the phrases “Will you take a seat please?” and “I’ll take 200g of ham please,” “take” is clearly being using in different ways.)

-to understand the meaning of adverb, pronoun, tense and negative;

(e.g. to describe a word in terms of the way it is used in a sentence.)

Read the information at the beginning of each section.

Work through the examples.

Complete the exercises.

Then either:

-send your work to be marked;

-mark your own work using the answer workbook.

Your tutor will tell you which system to use.

There is no Section 1 Part B or Section 2 in Subject-Verb Agreement/Verb Tense.

Where do I begin?

Answer the questions in Part C.

Part C

Highlight the verbs in these sentences.

1.Jai and George both play cricket.

2.Grandma watches television every evening.

Choose a ‘little verb’ from the box at the side to make each statement read correctly.

3.

Read the text then highlight the verbs in one colour and the subjects in another.

4.A radio station is under investigation after it burned £5,000 rather than give it to charity or to a listener for her breast enlargement operation. Birmingham-based Galaxy Radio torched the cash after listeners voted to burn it rather than give it to a competition winner who said she would use it for "a boob job and hair extensions,"

Choose the correct verb for these subjects.

(Hint: ‘we’ is in the word ‘were’)

7.

Now check your answers on the next page.
