Iowa State University
Academic Advising Innovation Grant Program
2017-2018 Guidelines
The Academic Advising Innovation Grant Program is designed to support initiatives that will enrich the academic advising experiences of undergraduate students and enhance the ability of academic advisers to meet the needs of a growing diverse undergraduate student population at Iowa State University. The program will encourage and support the development of innovative advising related programs or the expansion of best practices across the institution. The funding can be used to support creative programs at the departmental, college, or university level. Funding is available for either one-time programming/expenses or as seed money to stimulate additional funding from other sources for longer-term initiatives. Application deadline: rolling deadline, with review approximately every two months (January, March, May, July, September, November).
Examples of initiatives eligible for funding might include:
· Developing new faculty mentoring model
· Creating targeted advising programs for distinct populations (e.g. second-year students, international students, etc.)
· Offering unique professional development for advisers to meet changing student needs
· Developing new programming and collaborations between student affairs and a college office
· Assisting faculty advisers in developing scholarship of teaching and learning associated with academic advising
· Invitation of nationally known speaker on advising
Grant proposals may be submitted by ISU faculty or staff, as individuals or as teams. However, at least one of the participants is required to have undergraduate academic advising responsibilities. Collaborative proposals are encouraged, including proposals that indicate partnerships between academic departments and other units on campus. Grant applications will not be accepted at this time for individual academic adviser travel/conference attendance.
Typical grant awards range between $2000-4000 with larger grants being considered for proposals that include innovative partnerships between academic affairs and other campus units or significant technology costs and that actively support advising at an institutional level. No department or college hardware purchases will be funded (i.e. no grant funding for adviser laptops, iPads, computer stations, etc.)
Grant funds can support research assistants, undergraduate student payroll, honoraria, and other justifiable costs. Requests that include graduate salary costs must also include the respective fringe benefit expenses associated with the salary.
Grant funds provided by the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost will be transferred to a 70X (no 721) General University account established in the grant recipient’s department or unit. These funds must be expended by the end of the award period.
The following criteria will be used to evaluate proposals:
· Positive impact on student success/academic advising through programmatic, curricular, and scholarly initiatives;
· Innovative aspects of the proposal that can serve as models for others or advance academic advising in new directions;
· Evidence of collaboration among various units on campus;
· Evidence of potentially broad or continuing impact;
· Plan for evaluation and assessment of proposal’s impact as documented in the proposal
· Clearly outlined budget and spending plan
An impact report will be due no later than June 30, 2018. A report template will be provided.
