DISTRICT SOCIAL MEDIA USE

The District encourages online, specifically social media, engagement as a constructive medium for dialogue between students, staff, faculty and our community.District-affiliated social media use should contribute to the District’s mission as outlined in the Mission Statement. This AP addresses the use of official District social media accounts by COSDistrict employees, students and followers, including comments, posts and other engagement by the public on those accounts.Due to the changeable nature of social media, this AP may be periodically updated.Exception: The District claims no association with or liability for individual personal social media accounts.

Definition and Variety

1.Merriam Webster defines social media as follows: “Social media comprises forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content.”

2.There exist multiple manifestations of online and mobile social networking (social networks, blogs, microblogs, wikis, content-sharing, messaging, forums and check-in services) served by myriad providers.

3.Users are recommended to familiarize themselves with respective provider “Terms of Use” as the District will adhere to these policies.

Content Management

1.Content communicated through official District social media accounts reflects upon the District and is therefore expected to be appropriate, ethical, professional and legal.

2.Existing policies governing student and employee behavior apply to use of District social media accounts.

3.The District is not responsible or liable for content, information and views expressed by social media followers or third-party sites.

4.Linking third-party content does not imply endorsement by the District of that site or content.

5.The District reserves the right to remove any content that the District deems questionable, duplicative or misrepresentative of the District’s mission.

6.The District reserves the right to block and report users that repeatedly abuse District social media accounts or post content violating District policies.

Classroom Use of Social Media

  1. All courses that utilize a “public site” for optional or additional communication with students shall state this clearly on their course syllabus. Students shouldwillnot be required to establish a social media identity to be in a given class.
  2. Any instructor using social media sites to communicate with students must adhere to the social media site Terms of Use.
  3. Any optional use of a social media site in regular or online instruction shall adhere to all legal standards of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) as well as adhering to copyright laws and including accessibility for students with disabilities. When invited to post student work for purposes of public display, students should be informed that their material may be viewed by others.
  4. Students shall not be required to release personal information on a public site.
