Instructional Assistant – VPK-Career and Technology (CTE)

Qualifications

1.  / High School diploma or equivalent or special diploma required.
2.  / Minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited educational institution with at least 30 semester hours in general education core curriculum and/or child development and education or successful completion of the ParaPro test with a score of 464 or higher.
3.  / Experience working with children.
4.  / Valid Florida Driver License.
Job Goal
To assist certified personnel in achieving instructional goals through active participation in curricular activities and supervision of students.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of preschool students with and without disabilities. Ability to work effectively with young children, teachers, and parents. Assist in planning and implementing instructional activities. Ability to assist a bus driver with the loading, unloading, and monitoring of students with disabilities while on the bus may be required. Willingness to attend inservice programs recommended by the Early Childhood Resource Teachers. Ability to operate – or learn to operate – a variety of school-related equipment such as computers, AV equipment, and copy machines.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

1.  / Assist teachers in various classroom activities such as participating with the teacher as a team member in leading child-initiated activities; working on a one-to-one or small group bases with teacher-directed assignments; assist the teacher in maintaining positive behavior/child management; charting activities or some other form of individual observation; preparation of classroom materials.
2.  / Assist teacher with implementing educational standards.
3.  / Help monitor pre- and post-screening assessments that are administered to Pre-K children.
4.  / Assist teacher in maintaining student files and records.
5.  / Assist in collecting data as documentation of student performance of Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals.
6.  / Assist teacher with non-violent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CIP techniques).
7.  / Follow instructions of therapists, health professionals, and others to provide service to students – e.g., positioning, communication, feeding, tube-feeding, suctioning, catheterization, etc.
8.  / Assist in cafeteria activities such as supervising the preparation for breakfast and/or lunch (hand washing, etc.); escorting the students to and from breakfast and/or lunch; helping students learn proper eating habits and table manners by modeling these behaviors.
9.  / Prepare classroom materials using, but not limited to, the following equipment: copy machine, laminator, book binder, computer/word processor, letter making machine.
10.  / Assist teacher in distributing supplies.
11.  / Assist teacher in ordering, procuring, setting up, operating, and returning equipment.
12.  / Assist teacher in maintaining an inventory of non-consumable classroom materials, such as books, teacher guides, manipulatives, furniture, and technology kits.
13.  / Assist teacher with the safe loading and unloading of children onto buses, cars, vans, etc.
14.  / Ride a bus with students to ensure their safety.
15.  / Assist students in toileting and other personal hygiene activities (this may include changing underclothing).
16.  / Perform other duties as assigned commensurate with the skills and abilities of the position.
17.  / Provide outstanding customer service and use positive interpersonal communications skills.
18.  / Make all decisions and perform all tasks in accordance with Brevard Public Schools’ Organizational Values.
19.  / Ensure compliance with Board rules and applicable federal laws and regulations.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Medium Work: Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.
