10.2.1Drama – “The Curious Savage” spring play went very well. We had good attendance. Thanks to all the parents that helped us, especially Sharon Woo, Blanca Hatem, Agnes Chan, Linda Lum, Mrs. Yan, Mrs. Talbot, and parents of cast and crew. All of PTSA and Parent Alliance are so supportive to us, thank you so much. We don’t know total ticket sales yet, but it was a good turnout. We performed for the elementary schools on Thursday and Ynez, Repetto, Monterey Highlands, and Brightwood attended.

10.2.2Dance – Dance Team and the All Male team have begun their first ever competition season since the early 1980s. As new teams, it is rare to place the first time out, but our students have beat the odds. They have competed approximately 5 times and have placed in the top 4 positions every time. At the prestigious Miss Dance Drill USA nationals, Dance Team placed 3rd in the hip hop division, and placed 4th internationally. All Male placed 5th and received a cash award. Competitors and judges have never heard of Mark Keppel, but word has it that they are “the sleeping giant”! There is a dance concert in the auditorium on April 13, more info to come soon.

10.5.1Wish List

50 packs of pens were donated to teacher Roxanna Koutsky for awards to students who improved in English. Ms. Koutsky emailed: “The English Intensive and the Stretch classes awards/luncheon was Feb. 22 during 4th period and lunch. Students who have raised their reading lexile scores or have improved in some other thing were recognized. The English Intensive and Stretch classes are designed to help raise reading scores of low performing students. Students take the two hour block reading intensive class in lieu of the regular English class. If students need less help, they are place in the Stretch class along with the regular English class. I do wish to thank the Alliance for the pens. The students were really appreciative of them. All in all, the reading class awards ceremony was a very positive experience.”

10.5.2E-Waste Event

10.5.2.1Our E-Waste partner has our check of $1500 and wants to present it in person; will try to coordinate a day and time that works for them and us otherwise they will be asked to mail the check to us.

10.5.2.2Dr. Prentice was contacted regarding Keppel’s e-waste. MKHS usually gets rid of it twice a year. Depending on how much there is, MK might be able to save it if there wasn’t too much. Tony Chan motioned that we should consider another event in September/October, Dr. Bartlett seconded – the motion was passed. Sharon will research other companies.

10.5.3Coke Rewards –

Shirley Ling, Math Dept. Head, emailed: “Please thank the Alliance for the two graphing calculators that arrived on Friday. Every one we can get is a tremendous help to us. Thank you so much!”Coke has matching points days. You can save in your personal account and then donate to the school on the matching points day.

11.0NEW BUSINESS – none

12.0UNFINISHED BUSINESS

12.1Grants and Funding for Keppel

12.1.1Installation of cafeteria screen and LCD projector – according to Dr. Prentice, the requisition has been done. No exact date yet.

12.1.2Grant not to exceed $350 for language lab mics that was approved at our January meeting is no longer needed. This money can be used to fund other requests.

12.1.3Ms. Hake – United Science Club requests funds for Science Field Day. “In the past, we have asked the Alliance to assist with the costs of this day and you have graciously come through. This day if we host five schools will cost between $600-800 which includes all event awards, all consumables materials in event competition and facility use.” Dr. Bartlett motioned that we contribute $175 for awards and prizes; Alma Sanchez seconded – motion was passed.

12.1.4Ms. Estrada – “I am looking for a kidney-shaped table to use in my English Intensive classroom. I am blessed to have an adult aide to work with students in group, but the daily re-arrangement of seats to form her group is rather cumbersome, time consuming, and distracting to these students. I have one such table already, but another would be of GREAT use. Any help in locating such table, new or used, would be greatly appreciated. I have already requested one from Dr. Northcott, but she was not able to locate one already in the district.” Sharon had advertised the table on Craigslist and on our Wish List. This is a not a common item so there has been no response. Office Depot sells a kidney table for $154.99 plus tax. A member who wants to remain anonymous, donated $170 to the Alliance for the purchase of this table.
