WINUM
DISTRICT DIRECTORY
2014-2015
On behalf of children everywhere and especially in your own communities, I would like to thank you for what you have done in the past, what you are currently doing and the greater things that you will do in the future.
Many Optimists devote countless hours, dollars and mental consideration toward their community. Some even extend their own involvement and devotion to other communities by sharing ideas, assisting in hands-on projects and helping to organize Clubs to continue to work on the ground floor. The difference they make may never be known directly, but their impact is great. I would encourage each of you to make that kind of impact.
As you move into this year, I would encourage you to simply be THE BEST you at doing the job, assignment or role you have committed to undertake. Leave your mark on that role so that others can use you as a benchmark in the future.
Thank you again for helping us Bring out THE BEST in kids, ourselves, and everyone with whom we come into contact with. May they truly be blessed by our efforts and may we feel the true joy in giving.
Optimistically,
Ken Garner
Optimist International President, 2014-1015
Greetings Optimists in the WINUM District and the GREAT Plains Region,
Optimists are The BEST people in the world. As you move through the “Score for the Kids” year inyour community, I challenge you to think about, and act upon, 5 key areas that will make your club and our entire organization The BEST volunteer service organization ever!
Grow – Add New Optimists. Our clubs are always looking for new ideas and additional helpers for projects. There is no better way to accomplish both goals than to ask a friend to become a member of your club.
Manage – Promote Fun. Optimists have fun; it’s just our way of life! Be sure to include fun in all Optimist events, projects and club meetings. Be creative; attend the District Conferences to get some fresh ideas and share some of your proven winners.
Communicate – Personalize Your Message. Has a member of your club done an outstanding job on a project? Something as simple as writing a thank-you note to that member means so much. A personalized hand-written note shows how much you care.
Lead – Celebrate Victories, Large and Small. Recognition of accomplishments for your club and club members is vital!
Participate – Go the Extra Mile. Have you gone above and beyond the call of duty to make your club successful? Now’s your chance to help! Offer to chair a project or sponsor a new member into your club. Become actively involved, it takes EVERY MEMBER to make the club successful!
You are what makes this organization so great! On behalf of the kids and your community, I want to thank each club member for your service to your community. I appreciate you and I know they appreciate you.
Our motto says it all: Optimists – Bringing Out The BEST in Kids!
Yours in Optimism,
Janet Lloyd
2014-2015 Optimist International Vice President, Great Plains Region
COACHES CORNER
You have 30 seconds to give someone an idea what an Optimist is? Could you do it? It is not easy to do on the spot but needs some thought process to come say one. So here is my elevator speech:
What is an Optimist you ask?
“WE MENTOR YOUTH TO PROVIDE THEM THE TOOLS TO BECOME A MORE SUCCESSFUL LEADER FOR THEIR FUTURE”
Please take the time to think about your 30 seconds of fame and come up with a great opening to what optimist means to you.
This is the Year of “SCORE FOR THE KIDS”. So you are asking what does that mean. It means that we need to mentor to coach and to help shape the kids so we plant the seed of Optimism in their lives.
Very simply everything we do, we do for the kids, in our community, in our zone, in our state, and in the world. Helping kids does not end at our local meetings and club events.
So how does football play into this theme? Pretty simple in everything. Optimists in the club level, need a team of members to help with events. The district level needs a team of people to help with spreading the word of Optimist and to train you to become a better team leader. Optimist International needs a team of volunteers to run the programs that make optimism great. Just like football we all need a team around us to succeed.
Like every Governor before me we need to have goals to judge if we succeed in having a winning year.
So my 1st goal is to get more optimist members to come to the conferences, and convention by providing guest speakers, fun events and of course great leadership training. I want to bring fun to our conferences. It is my goal to make conferences so much fun that you cannot wait to attend the next one.
Vince Lombardi is quoted as saying “Individual commitment to a group effort that is what makes a team work.” I need you as the current members to go back to your clubs and recruit new members to come to our district conferences.
My 2nd goal is to bring more members to our clubs. Yes I know membership is a goal every year. But this year we as a district and with the district team will show you new ideas to recruit new members. Remember by coming to conferences we will provide you with fun and informational ideas. New ideas translate to new members thus more kids can be served in the WINUM district. With these goals we will be having a contest with the winner receiving 2 tickets to a home Packer game- tailgate party and parking. That is what the football field over on the right is for. Everyone can participate and anyone can win.
My 3rd goal is to raise $5000 for childhood cancer. Can we do this? Let’s all rally together and make it happen for the kids. We will be having football banks out to be filled so don’t fumble with them and fill them up.
And my 4th goal is to build 2 new clubs. Can we do this? Yes as a team the “WINUM team” we can overcome anything. The great Vince Lombardi said “WINNING ISN’T EVERYTHING IT IS THE ONLY THING” We will all win when we help more kids.
As your coach I pledge to work alongside of each & every one of you throughout the year. We will grow strong as a team and succeed as a team.
Now go out there and give it all you got and we will all be WINNERS.
Your coach
Ken Eirich
