I was honored to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Duluth during the 2015-2016 Rotary year, which taught me so much about the work Rotary does in our community, throughout the region, and on a global scale.

At this year’s District Conference, I was invited to help facilitate a group discussion on membership, lead by Membership Chair PDG Don Cavalier. Though many valuable ideas were shared by participants in this discussion, I was particularly taken by one concept that came up multiple times – tenacity. And to me, that is what Rotary is all about. Today, we live in a world that does not value patience. It is a world of instant gratification, driven by immediate results and instant rewards. But why should accomplishments be measured in haste, rather than the overall impact?

We are members of an amazing organization - one that has grown from just a few visionaries in the early 1900s, to one of over 1.2 million members worldwide, who are able to accomplish truly amazing things. But this didn’t happen overnight. Rotary’s success came from years of growth, driven by thoughtfully and patiently building relationships with individual citizens, private foundations, non-profit entities and global governments. Perhaps the best example of this is Rotary’s effort to eradicate polio. What was started in the early 1980s as a $100+ million campaign still thrives today as a multi-billion dollar effort, with support from some of the most notable people of our time. But despite more time and resources than we ever thought necessary, we can see success on the horizon. And what an amazing accomplishment that will be, when one day we can wake up and know that our work – that of each and every Rotarian – has completely eradicated a disease that at one time rendered more than 350,000 paralyzed each year. If we weren’t willing to stay the course, to believe in the cause and continue to invest our time and resources to see this project through, we would never have come to realize this success.

The same holds true for many other aspects of Rotary. After all, Rotary is an organization comprised of members from a wide variety of professions. Every day, through the course of our charitable work and fellowship conducted with fellow Rotarians, we learn more about each other and our respective vocations. The value of these connections become stronger with time, and ultimately will have a significant impact on each Rotarian’s professional success.

Yes, Rotary continues to grow and evolve, and needs to do so in order to remain competitive in a changing world. However, even though there are times that we may become frustrated, feel that we have more things to do than the time in the day allows, I ask you to remember what it means to be a Rotarian. Good things come with time, and the value of your Rotary membership grows every day you decide to be an active member, both in what you can do for yourself professionally, and what you can do for the rest of humanity.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Branden Hunner Robinson
