October Meeting

The next club meeting will be held on Thursday, October 9th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., in the back lobby of HobbyTown USA, 935 East Interstate 30, Rockwall, TX 75087.

For those of you not familiar with this location, it is on the same frontage road Soulman’s Bar-B-Que is located on. Continue to follow the road eastbound. HobbyTown USA is in the strip mall just east of Chuck E. Cheese’s. Turn right onto the road that passes between Double Dave’s Pizzaworks and Buffalo Wild Wings. HobbyTown USA will be on your right side. (Go ahead and give me a hard time for using restaurants as way points. What can I say, I LOVE food! I’ll bet you have no problem finding it either!!)

Minutes of the Sept. Meeting

The September reunion of the club’s general membership was held on September11th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Soulman's Bar-B-Que, 691 E. Interstate 30, Rockwall, TX75087. President Larry Wells held an informal gathering of members and guests in lieu of a formal meeting for various reasons. There was some confusion as to the booking for the banquet room and several of us inadvertently intruded on a party that was already taking place there, so we relocated to the main lobby. Several members were unaware that we had relocated to the main lobby and missed the gathering. We also lacked enough members to form a quorum. There were 9 regular membersand 2 guests in attendance.

FYI: The management at Soulman’s Bar-B-Que has asked that we locate a new meeting place for our monthly meetings. I’d like to personally express my sincerest gratitude to Clint Brunson and the entire Soulman’s Bar-B-Que family for allowing us the use of their banquet room for the past several years. Again, THANK YOU!

Please see the note regarding the name and address of our new meeting place! Another THANK YOU goes out to Max Cohen and family for allowing us the use of their facility. As an added benefit, you can pick up your R/C supplies while you are there. Keep in mind that Max extends all club members a 10% discount on products purchased in his store!

Notes of the August 2008 meeting: The minutes of the August 2008 meeting were not discussed at the September 2008 get together.

Treasurer’s Report:John Barnett did not issue a report. If he did, I missed it because of all of the commotion! I don’t believe we discussed any new applications. I’m not even sure if we still have room to accept any new members. I’m sure this will all be addressed at the October meeting.

Safety Committee Report:Bill Lenk was able to attend the festivities. However, he did not have an opportunity to share with us. My assumption is that he had nothing of great importance or he would have made an effort to pass along any issues that he may have had on his mind. Bill Vassallo was not present. Although Bill Lenk did not have anything for us, Larry Wells made mention of the importance of bringing a good voltage meter to the field and using it! He made it quite apparent that crashes have been the end result of some recent battery issues. Bear in mind that if you lose communication with your aircraft, you lose control of your aircraft and you are just as susceptible to injury as everyone else at that point. We don’t need any stray aircraft at the airfield and more importantly, we don’t need any aircraft straying from the airfield!

On that note, an e-mail has been sent out indicating that the neighbor north of our field has made a complaint of aircraft overflying his home. Please keep your craft within the acceptable boundaries. We need happy neighbors if we intend to keep our lease with the City of Rockwall.

As always: The Safety Officers have one of the hardest jobs in our club. If they approach you to discuss a safety issue, please show them the utmost respect. They only do so with the best intentions. Put yourself in their shoes and treat them as you would like to be treated!

Field Marshal Report:John Gillis did not issue a report either. There was one item pertaining to the field that was discussed: The club’s membership cast an affirmative vote to rent a commercial quality roller to roll the runway. David Hoye has been put in charge of accomplishing this task. Another thank you goes out to the members that have invested their time on field maintenance and field improvements. There always seems to be more work than there are volunteers to do it. Everyone counts and every little bit helps. Once again, THANK YOU!

Flying Proficiency Committee:I have a feeling that you may have guessed that Berl Driskill did not give a report. Not sure how you came to that conclusion. Must be your extremely keen powers of observation!

Old Business:We had no old business to discuss.

New Business:We did not discuss any new business either.

Program:Hmm. Program? Meeting?

The bull session was over around 7:13p.m.

Notable Items/Events

I made mention of Bob Leserve and Ronnie Stine’s JetMach write up in the August 2008 edition of Model Aviation. It is also worth mentioning that they have revamped their web site. In my humble opinion, the site has been very well done and is worth a look. The link is

Trader’s Talk:This is a new section I’ve chosen to add to the newsletter. If you would like me to post something for you, please feel free to e-mail the pertinent information and pictures to me. If you would also give me the courtesy of telling me if the items you are selling are no longer for sale/trade, I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to point out that I will do my best to present accurate information. However, as I am not perfect (Although some days I’d beg to differ.), you must speak directly to the sellers for specific details regarding their offers. As much as I would like to include pictures, it may not always be possible due to restrictions on the size of the newsletter file. We need to keep the file size manageable for those who are still using dial up connections. Without further adieu, here are the items currently up for bid:

Travis and Bill Lenk are selling the Great Planes Sportster airframe. This is a no reserve sale. Best bid buys the plane! Bill’s contact information is listed below (Look under Safety Officer in the 2008 Club Officers and Administrators section below.).

Ronnie Stine would like to trade some cash for two, like new, JR NER-649S PCMS 9 channel receivers. Both have a channel 39 crystal. His asking price is $60.00 each or $110.00 for the pair. Ronnie’s contact information is also listed below (You guessed it, look in the 2008 Club Officers and Administrators section below under Website Administrator.)

Upcoming Events:There are several flyers attached to the newsletter that contain details for upcoming events. If you have any trouble viewing them, please let me know. This is the first time I have attempted to add them in this fashion. This will allow the information to remain in its original format, so it alleviates any confusion I may create. It is a lot easier for me to add them to the newsletter so it helps reduce my workload also! Again, let me know if you can’t read them!

Clint Brunson has passed along information on an upcoming full scale fly-in at the Terrell airport. You can find more information at

Conrad Young has contributed with a web site that shows the dates, locations and details of full scale air shows. The website is

If the weather permits, those interested in full scale military aircraft may find the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show worth exploring this weekend. Details can be found at or at I can tell you from personal experience that I have been to this air show every year for the past 10 years and have yet to be disappointed. This air show’s primary purpose is to raise funds for the USO, a wonderful and worthwhile cause (For those who are not familiar, the USO helps boost the morale of the hard working men and women in our armed forces.). I highly encourage it if you have never been.

As promised, here are your flyers:
