Wildlife Biology

Instructor: Mr. Rushforth

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this course is to take a look at the management, physical, behavioral and interaction of wildlife. We will also identify the interactions of organisms within the environment.

OBJECTIVES:

1. The student will learn the development of wildlife management in North America and around the world.

2. The student will be able to identify the role each organism occupies in the natural environment.

3. The student will learn the interactions that occur between living organisms and non-living factors.

4. The student will learn the behavior and reproductive patterns of the organisms being studied.

5. The student will develop critical thinking abilities that will not only be useful in class, but also in life.

CLASSROOM RULES:

These five rules will help us maintain a class that will allow students to feel focused and safe. Failure to comply with a rule will result in a consequence.

·  Keep phones and other electronics put away.

·  Leave food and drinks in your locker or backpack.

·  Talk only when it is appropriate.

·  Speak politely to others.

·  Obey other instructions as given.

Consequences: If students disobey class rules they will lose their class participation points which will affect their grade. If the problems continue after a student/teacher conference, parents will be contacted. If the problem persists, the student will be referred to an assistant principal. If the student obeys the classroom rules he or she may earn extra points and special privileges.

GRADING POLICY:

Grades will be calculated from three areas.

·  45% from tests and large projects.

·  25% from homework, group work, and assignments that may be given.

·  20% from attendance, behavior, and participation in class.

·  10% from quizzes and other assessment tools.

Grading scale:

A 93-100% C 67-71%

A- 89-92% C- 64-66%

B+ 85-88% D+ 61-63%

B 81-84% D 58-60%

B- 76-80% D- 55-57%

C+ 72-75% F 0-54%

Grades will be up dated once weekly

ATTENDANCE:

1.  We will follow the attendance policy as set out in the Copper Hills Policies and Procedures Manual.

2.  Each student who is tardy will need to sign in as they enter class or they could be marked absent for the day.

MAKE UP WORK:

When a student misses class, they will have 5 school days to make up any class assignments, labs, or quizzes. If they wait longer than this the student may run the risk of having the assignment recorded for partial credit. No work will be accepted for a sluff. No late work is allowed to be handed into a substitute teacher. If the this student misses class what was done in class will be posted on Mr. Rushforth’s webpage at

WRITING

Writing is considered very important to science. It is through written reports that important discoveries are explained to the world. It will also be very important in this class as we will be writing both classroom and lab reports.

PERSONAL ELECTRONICS

Personal electronics (especially cell phones) are to be used only when permission is given by the teacher. If electronics are used at other times, the teacher may confiscate the device.

LABS

This course will include several labs that correspond with various topics we will be discussing throughout the year. If at any time you have a concern about a lab please notify the instructor to resolve the concerns. If you happen to miss a lab because of an excused absence then you must complete the lab before or after school within three days of the lab being performed by the class. A 20 dollar lab fee is required for wildlife biology. This fee is used for expendables and supplies used in the wildlife biology labs. The fee will appear on student accounts. Please pay online by credit card or if preferred, fees can be paid in the main office after the second week of school.

HALL PASS USE:

The hall pass is a privilege not a right and not to be abused. Each student will be given four hall pass coupons to be used during the quarter. Those not used can be turned in at the end of the quarter for extra credit. Please feel free to talk to the instructor if you may need to use it more than four times in a quarter. If a student comes into class tardy he/she does not get to use the hall pass that day even if a hall-pass is available. Also excessive use of the hall pass can result in loss of privileges for the rest of the quarter.

TECHNOLOGY USE:

We will use technology in this class to create projects, do research and help with communication. So I encourage you to bring it with you to class. Just remember that they are to be brought out when and only when instructed to do so. If electronics are brought out and /or used at other times, the teacher will confiscate the device for the remainder of the period.
