3.Catalog Description [§335.2] (Insert the description in space below):
A skills-building sequence for non-native English speakers that teaches the grammatical structure, vocabulary, and sound system of American English. Integrated development of the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills within each level. Focus on both fluency and accuracy. Students who must enroll in ESL courses are identified through the ESL portion of the College Testing and Placement Program.

5.Learning Outcomes [§335.2]

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
I. Listening Component Outcomes
- Use notes to retrieve oral information from lectures
- Apply oral informationto produce spoken and written discourse
II. Reading Component Outcome
- Utilize vocabulary strategies of word parts, dictionary strategies, and context clues
- Apply comprehension strategies to topic, main idea, and supporting details
- Respond to readings via comprehension quizzes, summaries, and reading logs
III. Speaking Component Outcome
- Demonstrate proficiency in suprasegmentals through practice and a memorization activity
- Discuss academic issues from lectures
- Express and defend points in a sustained2-5 minute presentation
IV. Writing Component Outcome
- Compose expository writing of 5 paragraphs and at least 250 words in length
- Revise and edit writing for common grammatical errors
- Use College technical resources to produce correctly formatted writing
6.Planned Sequence of Instruction [§335.2]
[These must be designed to help students achieve the learning outcomes.]
The course has been designed and the texts have been selected to integrate the five skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar with equal emphasis and time on each skill.
The texts provide the sequence and suggested activities in order to accomplish the following goals:
1.Structure additional opportunities for students to continue developing and
refining their oral communication skills, such as prepared discussions, oral reports, etc.:
Books: Well Said(Chapters 3-6 and Appendix B)
Listening and Notetaking Skills Level 2 (5 chapters- one from each unit)
Memorization Activity: “Annabel Lee”
Pronunciation focuses on consonant sounds (Appendix B), sound/spellings patterns, final consonant sound/ spellings, Syllables and word endings, and stress, rhythm, and intonation in words.
Listening comprehension concentrates on note-taking skills. One chapter from each unit is used. Through teacher directed and homework activities, students begin to develop their own system of taking notes. The lab teacher demonstrates different types of notes, abbreviations, and outlining techniques.
Memorization Activity:
“Annabel Lee” assigned at the mid-term point of the course. A recording of the poem is given to the students. Consonant sounds and stress and intonation are practiced using this poem. Students recite the poem during the final exam.
2.Present complex sentence structure, transformations to passive form and reported speech in the standard tenses, and the concept and structure of contrary-to-fact:
- Present perfect tense
- Present perfect continuous
- Past perfect tense
- Past continuous tense
- Passive voice
- Modals: present, past, hypothetical
- Infinitives
- Gerunds
- Clauses: adverbial, noun
3.Continue reading development through informative reading selections and a novel:
4-5 readings – readings are chosen per instructor discretion.
One unabridged novel
4.Practice beginning expository writing related to giving instructions, narration, cause and effect, comparison/contrast, classification, and process analysis and grammatical structures and punctuation associated with each.
At least three typed compositions using different rhetorical modes such as description, narration, comparison/contrast, process analysis, and persuasion.
In addition to the rhetorical mode, topics are generated to reinforce a grammatical topic or coincide with a lab topic.
5.Introduce use of the word processing component of the computer lab as a tool for revision in writing.

Assessment of student learning outcomes for the course, as required by the Shared Governance Policy – Assessing Institutional Effectiveness, is part of regular curriculum maintenance and/or improvement.
