Directions for emailing Microsoft Word documents to :

Hopefully, everyone has Microsoft Word because that is the word processing program our school system has. I usually can’t open any other word processing file here.

I prefer the students to send an electronic copy of their work for editing purposes and for our Written and Illustrated books later in the year. A print out of their work is not preferred because I want them to have access to change the document later on in the year.

Open an email to

Minimize the open email. Put the assignment name (ex: research report) in subject line with student’s name.

Open Microsoft Word and find the document.

Select all or highlight the entire work or writing assignment including the heading.

Control C or usually choose edit on the toolbar and copy.

Go back to the open email that is blank. You may have to click in the email to make sure the cursor appears.

Control V or usually choose edit on the toolbar and paste the work or writing into the email.

Some families know how to attach a file to an email and that works too. Sometimes, the school system scans and blocks attachments.

To attach a file, choose the paperclip in the toolbar of the email, usually select file, and find your document. Once the document name is highlighted, click insert and that paperclip should show up under the subject line with the file name. There may be some variation depending on your email account.

It is best if you are going to attach a document, to also highlight, copy, and paste it into the email just to be sure.

Thank you so much for all of your support with technology.

Students are always welcome to type their final drafts and/or have their parents type it for them as long as parents type what their child has written. If you feel a discussion is needed about errors, have a talk, have the child change the handwritten copy, and then type in the correct revisions you and your child discussed.

Let me know if you need any further help. I appreciate the support and the ways you encourage your child to write and use technology.

There may be other methods for attaching files and sending files. Try what you know if these methods don’t seem to work for you and I can let you know what I can open and read.

It is perfectly okay for the students to handwrite their final draft in their best handwriting too. I like to provide choices for my students.

Thanks again for all of your help!
