Southern Colonies had warm climate and rich soil while New England had a cold climate and rocky soil.

The Southern colonies grew cash crops like tobacco, rice and indigo on large plantations while New England built ships, fished, raised livestock on self-sufficient farms.

  1. Identify the main religious groups in each of these colonies – Maryland,

Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

Massachusetts - Puritans

  1. How did the colony of Rhode Island and Connecticut get established? Who

established them?

Rhode Island- Roger Williams was known as a dissenter. His views went

against the Puritan Leaders. He was forced to leave Massachusetts and went to Providence in 1636. This eventually became Rhode Island.

Connecticut – Thomas Hooker dissented against the religious practices of the Puritans in Massachusetts. He left and founded Hartford in 1639. This eventually became Connecticut.

  1. Using a map of the Thirteen Colonies, be able to label all of them in the

proper location. Names of the colonies will be given to you.
