SUBJECT: SITUATION REPORT ON TORNADOES #2

OVERVIEW – According to the National Weather Service (NWS) a strong F-1 to weak F-2 tornado hit the city of Hartford in Washington County yesterday afternoon. A series of storms moved across southern Wisconsin. Seven counties were under tornado warnings. Those included Sheboygan, Dane, Washington, Rock, Jefferson, Dodge and Calumet. The NWS has not yet confirmed a tornado touchdown southwest of Stoughton in Dane County. There were two waterspouts; one northeast in Lake Winnebago and another in Lake Michigan off Sister Bay in Door County. Washington County is the only county that sustained damage.

Washington County – According to Washington County Emergency Management three people were injured in the tornado. The mayor of the city of Hartford has declared a state of emergency. Local officials estimate $4 million in damage and recovery costs. Most of the damage should be covered by private insurance. In the Uniform Disaster Situation Report the following information was reported:

Damage to Homes: 135 Minor (roof and siding damage) 12 Major (structural damage) 0 Destroyed

Estimated Dollar Amount: $1,500,000

Damage to Businesses: 7 Minor 3 Major 0 Destroyed

Estimated Dollar Amount: $1,000,000

Damage to public infrastructure and debris clearance: $1,456,000

The Red Cross continues to operate an outreach center to provide assistance and meals to disaster victims at Rossman School. Approximately 20 people are displaced as a result of tornado damage but have sought shelter with family and friends. Most of the power has been restored to the city of Hartford except for the heavily impacted areas. Various area fire, police, public works and emergency management agencies continue to assist with mutual aid.

Wisconsin Emergency Management – Wisconsin Emergency Management continues to be in contact with Washington County. There has been no request for state assistance.
