INTRODUCTION

The Catholic community recognises the importance of school self-evaluation as a continuous process that is complemented from time to time by external inspection. The Self Evaluation Form SEF48 is designed primarily to assist you in your annual self-evaluation of Catholic Life, Worship and Religious Education. The SEF48 also makes an important contribution to inspections. It provides the school and the inspectors with a means of ensuring that inspection covers matters of potential significance to the school.

Guidance on completing the form

This self-evaluation form (revised 2015) for the cycle starting January 2013 is modelled on the sample s5 SEF. Description is not required instead it seeks the school’s evaluative judgements and the grounds on which the judgements are made.

When making judgements leaders should refer to the Section 48 Inspection Schedule where there is ‘Outline Guidance’ and ‘Grade descriptors’.

Inspectors will read the SEF alongside the school improvement plan both to look for the ways in which self-evaluation informs improvement planning and also how self-evaluation indicates the effectiveness of earlier planning.

Interviews with governors, the headteacher and staff during an inspection will be focused on the self-evaluation form and other documents. In addition, headteachers will be invited either in person or through the subject leader or other senior staff, to accompany the inspector in one or more observations. This will enable the school to demonstrate the quality of its self-evaluation in a different way.

Grade descriptions

In judging `How effective the school is in providing Catholic education’, inspectors will decide whether the school is:

‘outstanding’ (grade 1) – highly effective in delivering outcomes that provide exceptionally well for all pupils’ needs;

‘good’ (grade 2) – effective in delivering outcomes that provide well for all pupils’ needs;

‘requires improvement in order to be good’ (grade 3) – not yet a good school, but is not inadequate;

‘inadequate’ (grade 4) – has serious weaknesses and requires significant improvement.

Schools are to evaluate and judge their‘Overall Effectiveness’ in providing Catholic education.

This evaluation must include:

Outcomes for Pupils

Provision

Leaders and Managers

The Overall Effectiveness judgement, which is the last one to be made, is more than an arithmetical calculation. The school should evaluate each aspect of performance, looking at strengths and areas for development and consider the significance of each aspect in order to arrive at a balanced judgement based on evidence.The SEF should make it clear to readers why the school has arrived at the overall judgement in terms that are particular to the school.

Sevenspecific areas of school life are to be addressed:

OUTCOMES

The extent to which pupils contribute to and benefit from the Catholic Lifeof the school.

How well pupils achieve and enjoy their learning in Religious Education.

How well pupils respond to and participate in the school’s Collective Worship.
