A brief Club History, our Aims and Objectives.

Dinnington Main 1908/1914 entered in the Hatchard Cup League. This started as a cup competition but as it developed over the years moved towards what we know now as a league formation.

Dinnington Colliery 1914/1919 entered in the wartime Wharncliffe Charity League. This league due to shortage of teams allowed entries from Minor leagues up to the standard of The Football League.

Dinnington Main Colliery 1919/1928 rejoined the Hatchard League. In 1921 made their first entry into the FA cup. Against Silverwood Colliery loosing after extra time 3-4. 1921/1928 promoted to the Sheffield Association League.

Dinnington Athletic 1928/1937 – war - 1946/1976 entered in the Sheffield Association League. In 1932 won the prestigious Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup hence qualifying for the FA cup beating Bentley Colliery and Silverwood Colliery by the same 3-1 margin but lost to Rawmarsh Welfare in the next round. Having waited many years, in 1934 saw the club get to the 1st round proper away against Chester but lost 3-1. 1936/1937 were rewarded entry into the Yorkshire League. Their high point winning the Second Division title in 1969/1970

Dinnington Colliery 1976/1985 joined the Midland League. This was the start of the decline of the Football Club. In 1985 along with the Colliery itself, the club folded.

At the Start of the Millennium, Regeneration of Dinnington had come at last. On the site of the old Colliery and area around, new Factories, Supermarkets, small businesses are appearing and new public buildings like the Dinnington Resource Centre on Laughton Road are being built. Hence the emergence of the new Dinnington Town Football Club being formed in 2000/2001.

The first two seasons the club played at a ground near Meadowhall in the Central Midlands League as the Dinnington Ground did not meet the Leagues criteria. Amazingly the Club gained promotion to the Supreme Division as the facilities at the Resource Centre became available for season 2002/03 which we celebrated in style by winning the Central Midlands League Cup.

We have three Senior Teams the 1st team competes in the Supreme Division of the Central Midlands League, Reserves in the County Senior League. We have an under 18’s team and three boys teams under 7’s 8’s & 9’s to join them this season 2004/05 we have formed two girls teams at under 11’s and 12’s.

We are eager for success, our aim is promotion to the Northern Counties East League. To get to that stage we need to carry on the hard work on and off the pitch. We have been self financing in upgrading the changing rooms, dug outs and covered standing areas to meet the Leagues criteria, all the work being done by club members. To meet our goal we need to:-

  • Build Club house and changing rooms.( Preferred )
  • Erect floodlighting (to meet the qualifying standard)
  • Fence off the playing areas (to meet the qualifying standard)
  • Concrete hard standing on the three other sides the site (to meet the qualifying standard)
  • Make repairs to the existing pitch fencing.
  • Construct a stand (to meet the qualifying standard).
  • Construct a training pitch.

Although Major improvement works are going ahead in the area, Dinnington has still a long way to go and is still lacking any sporting facilities. We believe the improvements will generate interest and fill the gap that is lacking at the moment. We are trying to promote the club locally in the local free press, Worksop Guardian and Sheffield Star take an interest in our development and the club is always mentioned in the sports pages. We now have a link with the Dinnington Sports Co-ordinator which will allow us to coach in the primary schools to all children boys and girls and give them a taster session which will encourage them to take up the sport and come along to our soccer school. We have been encouraged by the interest so far.

Through our Saturday morning Soccer School at the Resource Centre, Managed by our FA trained coaches, these children will be the mainstay of our teams from under 7’s, right through to the First Team. We want to win, but only in the right way, honest and fair, this will also be stressed to the parents who have a huge part to play as the youth teams develop. Without the parents these teams will never survive, the Management team will encourage all volunteers to take an active part in running the club. The Managers will be specially picked and encouraged to attend coaching courses to attain the highest levels. The most talented and dedicated youngsters will be encouraged to further their ambitions in football and with our link with ‘’Sheffield Wednesday Development Centre’’ at Dinnington we have a structured route to become a professional player. With these links and hard work we are to join the FA Development Programme and become a ‘’Charter Standard Community Club’’. The FA Charter Standard Scheme will ensure and assist clubs to provide a safe and pleasant environment and a quality experience for all players. We hope this will encourage these young people to play for life at the highest possible standard and also develop into respected adults.

Dinnington Town FC main Club Sponsor.

As the successful 2002/2003 season came to an end the players were given a well earned rest but for the Committee it was business as usual, applications for planning permission for the floodlights have been sent in, tenders for the floodlights and security fencing sent out and plans for the future discussed. But the most significant milestone for the Club was securing a Main Club sponsorship deal with local new Company Morrell Exhaust and Tyre Services Ltd. After a number of discussions with Chief Executive Lee Gaskill he has been offered a place on the Management Committee, his role will be on the Commercial side. Not only is he prepared to invest in the club he has vast business experience and business contacts which can only be a benefit to our club. He will leave the day to day running of the club to the existing Committee members. Lee is a Southerner, his partner is Katie, he is an ex footballer, his and Katie’s passion is football he and Katie will get on well within the Club. He is very exited about joining the Management Team after we showed him the potential and how committed we are to the success of the Club. We have gone a long way in just a few years but now in partnership with Morrell’s, Lee and Katie we will better equipped for the future.

We are emerging from the ashes of this old mining Town hence our club logo – Phoenix. Formed in 1908 lets hope 2008 we are in the Northern Counties East League, with a team and facilities every one from Dinnington will be happy and proud to be associated with.

Yours in sport Dinnington Town Football Club
