Dinner Party Project

Due: Monday, May 22, 2017

Dear Parents,

We have started working on one of our final projects for the year, an immigration project. In our classroom we have used web technology to take a virtual tour of Ellis Island as well as studied some immigrants, and explored immigration data. We collaborated to make a class quilt and started speaking about our cultural backgrounds. In the upcoming week we will relive a boy’s journey to America. They have also been keeping a KWL chart (What they know, Want to know, and what they have learned about Ellis Island). All of this information will help the children to create their final project.

What to do: We will be having a “Dinner Party”!

Part I

You will need to sit down with a family member and investigate where your family came from. Try to plan some questions ahead of time (We will work on this in school) so that you may interview this person. It could be your mom, dad, grandparents, aunts, or uncles etc.

The person you interview must be of the same cultural background as you, for example I am Italian so I might interview my dad since he is of Italian descent. Some questions you can ask are:

Where were you born?

Did you enter the United States through Ellis Island? (They do not have to have entered through Ellis Island. However, if they have immigrated through Ellis Island try your best to trace your family history back to Ellis Island)

You will then be responsible for writing1-pagein interview format. (With a cover, size 12 font, and include a copy of your recipe) See below.

Part II

For Monday the 22nd you will need to prepare a food dish from your culture to share at our dinner party. You should be the one to make it with assistance from your parents, grandparents, relative etc. You must include your recipe in your report.

We will then have our dinner party in school Monday afternoon

(If something needs to be refrigerated this will not be a problem, but I can not heat anything up).

During our dinner party you will be responsible for giving a 1-2 Minute oral presentation based on what you have learned from your interview. You will not have a paper or index cards in front of you.

You may also wish to dress the part i.e.: wear one article of clothing from your country of origin (If I were from Mexico I might wear a Poncho).

This project will help you to gain cultural awareness.

Have fun with this one!
