CATALOG DESCRIPTION: A continuation of Digital Photography. Employs further investigation of the digital media and current version of Photoshop. Prerequisite: Art 141.

Course Outline:

OUTCOMES / MEASUREMENTS
An expanded working knowledge of the digital camera with respect to its finer elements of technical application. / Personal use of their own digital camera with increased image production and quality.
A thorough understanding of Photoshop CS4 as a tool for photographers. / Completion of lessons, report, and semester portfolio covering many tools and techniques available with this software program.
Comprehension and application of individuality and artistic communication in digital photography. / Display of personal imagery and evidence of exploration and involvement with the available tools. Critique sessions involving self analysis of art projects and peer exchange.
An appreciation and respect for other working photographers and artists. / Class discussions and group critiques.

MATERIALS:

Digital camera, preferably an SLR with at least 10mega pixels. Cables and software for downloading images to your own computers. CDs or jump drives for image storage, Epson Premium Presentation Paper, Double Sided, Matte for digital use (8.5x10), binder and sleeves for portfolio.

ADVICE: Your grade is highly influenced by your attendance, participation, and willingness to learn and be flexible.

ATTENDANCE: One unexcused absence is allowed. All others will affect your grade. I reserve the right to purge you from the class if you miss three or more classes without a valid excuse.

90-100%=A

80-89%=B

70-79%=C

60-69%=D

Below 60%=F

27 January:

Introduction, discuss the class schedule, lab schedule, review individual backgrounds in photography. Go over U-Drive storage. Watch YouTube videos:

3 February:

Lasertran Experiment: We will create photographic decals that we will apply to the surface of a smooth, non-absorptive surface such as glass, glazed ceramics, and metal. Bring your object to class and have a photo picked out ahead of time. 10 points Due today.

Discuss book project:

You will create your own photo book using This is an online production so you will be able to do some of your work from home. We will go over use of the website and how to choose the right design for your book. Your book should be thematic meaning that the subject matter has to be tightly related. You may decide to create an artist’s book of abstract images, a documentary project, or a book of images about one particular subject. You are encouraged to include words or captions in your book if you feel it fits your theme. If you utilize works from other authors you must cite the author’s name with the text. (Plagiarism is not allowed!) Please think about what you want to do and make sure you have a well developed idea to tell me about next week. You will be responsible for ordering the book in due time for our critique. Do not procrastinate. Get on this right away! The cost of this production is not included in your student fees. You are encouraged to make larger books but if a smaller one fits your price range better that is fine. I would really like to put these in the student art show if we have space. 15 points

Practice time to work on your images.

10 February:

Printing on alternative sources with InkAid. We will prep non traditional sources such as aluminum, grocery bag, cloth, etc. After drying we will experiment with printing the images. Have 2 images sized and ready to print. Also, bring your digital card in case we also use my mini printer.

Scraffito—Print an image on glossy paper and stylize it by using sand paper and inscribing tools to transform. 10 points 2 prints due today.

17 February:

Scanning demo—Use the scanner as a tool to create digital images from negatives or collages from photos and found objects. I will show you how to do both.

Using either a negative or a photograph create a two dimensional collage using a variety of scanable elements (Please don’t use anything dirty or that will scratch the scanner!) 10 points 1 print due: 3 March

24 February:

Create a new person with collage. We will take old images that you have or ones you freshly create and cut them up into several parts. They will then be assembled into a completely new person or creature gluing and affixing the pieces to a background of construction paper 10 points 1 print due today.

3 March: Critique scanned images.

PowerPoint Creation: My True Life Story. Using PowerPoint or a similar presentation software you will create a short (10-15 slides minimum) narrative of your life. This can be literal or metaphorical. You are simply creating a story about you using your digital images. The presentation must have some text and can have added items form clip art, etc. You will need to tell your story when presenting this so make up a good one and have it prepared in notes. 15 Points. Due 14 April

Show Darkroom Damsel to Digital Dynamo: My True Life Storyas an example and demonstrate how to use PowerPoint.

Art Show: 1-2 images (your choice but nothing that has already been turned in.) matted and ready to hang. 10 points Due 21 April

10 March: Final Project: Your final body of work will consist of 7-10 photographic images of a cohesive theme. I want you to thoroughly explore color or shape. If you explore a color, for instance yellow, all images must be concentrated on yellow subject matters as the main emphases. If you choose a shape, for instance a circle all images must include a distinguishable circle in them. This collection will be printed either using the school printers, Nichol’s Photo Lab, Wal-Mart, or another online photo lab. Minimum size is 8 x 10. Your images must have titles and will be spread out on a table to view. 20 points Due 12 May.

17 March:

24 March: Spring Break. No class.

31 March:

Class time to work on your projects.

14 April:

PowerPoint presentation due. You will present your work to the class today so be prepared.

28 April:

Field trip on portraiture. We will go to some of my secret spots to make someinteresting portraits. Work with reflectors, diffusers, and available light. Demonstrate the portable flash softbox. 5 points for participating

5 May:

12 May:

Critique final projects.

19 May:

Return work. Farewell.
