Welcome to the new school year. We hope that all of our students are eager to return to school and are ready to begin another exciting year of learning. Our purpose in putting together this brochure is to inform you as parents of the Compulsory Attendance Law (Educational Code 48200), and provide you with our attendance expectations. We believe that in order for us to teach and for your children to learn to their fullest potential, they need to be in regular attendance. Children who are excessively absent suffer losses in educational achievement and tend to perform poorly on tests. They are less likely to develop positive social skills and friendships. Children who miss school are also more likely to become involved in delinquent behavior and are at greater risk of dropping out of school.

Our school’s attendance goal is for every student to be here everyday and on time. We are asking you to help us improve our school’s attendance by making sure that your children are in school every day and on time. As you read through this brochure, you will find the school’s attendance policy, our attendance incentive program including attendance recognition policy and tips on making sure that your child’s attendance remains in good standing. We strive to provide a warm, safe, and caring environment that will provide consistent expectations for all children.

Compulsory Attendance Law

Did you know that it is the lawfor children

between the ages of 6 and 18 to attend school every day and it is a PARENT’S responsibility to ensure that his or her child gets to school? If your child has more than three (3) days ofUNEXCUSED absences or is tardy for morethan 30 minutes on three (3) occasionswithout a valid excuse in a school year, he/sheis considered NON-COMPLIANT.

Pursuant to Education Code and Penal Code, you and/or your child may be prosecuted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and failure to comply with compulsory education laws. Possible penalties for these violations include up to one (1) year in county jail and/or up to $2,500 in fines.

What’s an EXCUSED ABSENCE?

Absences are ONLY allowed for the following reasons:

Illness of the student
Student’s Doctor or Dental Appointments

(Try to schedule routine check-ups during after school hours or off time. If not possible, send the student to school before or after the appointment)

Student’s court appearance
Bereavement of an Immediate Family Member

(1 DAY within the state or 3 DAYS outside of the state)

What’s an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE?

These types of absences are UNACCEPTABLE, and your child will be considered NON-COMPLIANT from school.

Mother, Father or any other relative is ill
Personal business or personal reasons
Vacation, including going out of state or country (i.e. long weekends, leaving the week before your child’s school goes on vacation or returning late from vacation)
There was no one to bring or pick up child from school
Appointments for other family members
Rainy Days
Car problems
Oversleeping
Babysitting

Children are NOT allowed to be pulled out of school for any extended period of time due to family emergencies and/or vacations. Please plan ALL family vacations during your child’s school vacation. Make sure you pick up a school calendar in the main office so that you can plan your vacation accordingly. When in doubt, do not hesitate to call the school’s main office.

If your child is absent, please contact the schoolby <Insert time> a.m. to let us know the reason of the absence and how long your child will be absent <Insert School Phone Number>.
Upon the child’s return, please send a writtenexcuse signed by the parent stating the date of the absence and the reason. Include your child’s full name and date of birth.
If your child is excluded from school by the nurse, he/she must be re-admitted by the nurse upon his/her return (i.e. chicken pox, pink eye, broken limb, or any contagious illness).
Any student who arrives late to school must report to the office to pick up a TARDY slip. A student is considered tardy if not in his/her seat or assigned area when school begins at <insert time> a.m.

When a student begins to accumulate excessive absences and/or tardies, the following procedure will be followed:

The teacher will notify parent of poor attendance.
The Pupil Services and Attendance Counselor (PSA) will contact the parents regarding the absences or tardies and enlist their assistance in getting the child to school every day and/or on time.

If the student continues to be absent and/or late, the PSA will mail out a letter to the parents informing them of the continued problem.
Parents will receive Truancy Letter #1 after a student has three (3) unexcused absences in the school year.
Should the problem continue, the PSA will do a home visit to determine intervention needs.
Truancy Letter #2 will be mailed out after a student has more than five (5) unexcused absences. An attendance conference will be scheduled to discuss absences and/or tardies with parents and a contract will be developed to ensure that the child’s attendance improves.
If a student has nine (9) unexcused absences, he will be considered HABITUALLY Non-Compliant and Truancy Letter #3 will be mailed out to the parents.

If the child’s attendance fails to improve, a referral to the School Attendance Review Board will be made.

Attendance Recognition Policy

All students who meet the following criterion for Perfect Attendance will receive a trophy the last week of the school year.

Enrolled and present the first day of school.
No days absent of any kind and No tardy arrivals.
The student must be present for half of the school day prior to leaving school early for illness related reasons.
If the student attends a Principal approved class trip it will not count against the student’s attendance record.
Students who participated in the Independent Study program will not be eligible.

Students with perfect attendance for the school month will receive recognition and a certificate at the monthly awards assembly.

Students with an attendance rate of 96% and above will have his/her name on the Attendance Board.

El propósito de hacer este folleto es para informarle a usted como padre de la Ley Obligatoria de Asistencia (Código de Educación 48200), y proveerle nuestras expectativas de asistencia. La Ley Obligatoria de Asistencia

¿Sabía usted que es la ley que los niños entre

las edades de 6 y 18 años asistan a la escuela

todos los días, y es la responsabilidad de los

PADRES asegurarse que sus hijos vayan a la

escuela? Más de tres (3) días de faltas SIN EXCUSA

en un año escolar o tarde en tres (3) ocasiones por

más de 30 minutos en un año escolar, son

consideradas AUSENCIAS SIN PERMISO (sin

justificación).

De acuerdo con el Código de Educación y el Código Penal, usted y/o su hijo/a podrían sufrir una acción judicial por falta de cumplimiento con las leyes de Educación Obligatoria.

La pena por una violación de estas podrían ser de hasta un año en la cárcel y/o hasta $2,500 en multas.

¿Qué es una FALTA JUSTIFICADA?

Faltas con excusa son SOLAMENTE por:

Enfermedad (del estudiante únicamente)

Citas con el doctor o dentista (del estudiante únicamente)

(Trate de hacer las citas rutinarias después de la escuela o durante las vacaciones. Si no es posible, mande a su hijo/a a la escuela antes o después de la cita)

Luto de un miembro de la familia inmediato

(Limite: 1 DIA en el estado o 3 DIAS fuera del estado)

¿Qué es una FALTA SIN JUSTIFICACION?

Estos tipos de faltas NO SON ACCEPTABLE y su hijo/a será considerado AUSENTE SIN PERMISO. Faltas SIN EXCUSA valida incluyen:

Madre, Padre o cualquier otro familiar enfermo

Asuntos personales o razones personales

Vacaciones, incluyendo fuera del estado o país (i.e. largo fin de semana, saliendo la semana antes que su hijo/a salga de vacaciones, o regresando tarde de vacaciones)

No había alguien para llevar o recoger a los niños de la escuela

Citas para otros miembros de la familia

Días lluviosos

Problemas con el carro

Se quedó dormido

Quedarse en casa para cuidar de sus hermanitos

NO se permite sacar a los niños por emergencias familiares o vacaciones largas. Por favor planee sus vacaciones familiares durante las vacaciones de su hijo/a. Asegúrese de recoger un calendario escolar en la oficina principal para que pueda planear sus vacaciones sin que interfieran en la instrucción de su hijo/a. Si tiene alguna duda, por favor llame a la escuela.

Póliza de Asistencia De la Escuela <Insert Name> Preparatoria

Si su hijo/a falta a la escuela, por favor llame a la escuela antes de las <insert time> a.m. para informarnos de la razón de la falta y por cuanto tiempo su hijo/a estará ausente <insert school phone #>.

Cuando regrese su hijo/a la escuela, por favor mande una nota firmada por usted con la fecha de la falta y explicando la razón de la falta. Incluya el nombre completo del estudiante y fecha de nacimiento.

Si su hijo/a es excluido/a de la escuela por la enfermera, él/ella deberá pasar con la enfermera antes de regresar a la escuela (i.e. alguna enfermedad contagiosa, varicela, un miembro roto o infección de ojos).

Cualquier estudiante que llegue tarde a la escuela deberá pasar por la oficina a recoger una nota de tardanza. Los estudiantes serán marcados tarde si no están en su asiento o área designada cuando la campana suene a las <insert time> .

Cuando un estudiante empieza acumular faltas excesivas y/o llegadas tarde, el siguiente procedimiento ocurrirá:

La maestra notificará a los padres de mala asistencia.
La Consejera de Servicios Estudiantiles yAsistencia (PSA, por sus siglas en inglés) se pondrá en contacto con los padres y pedirá su ayuda en asegurarse que el estudiante asista a la escuela todos los días y a tiempo.
Si el estudiante continua a faltar y/o llegar tarde a la escuela, la PSA mandara una carta notificándoles a los padres que el problema de asistencia continua.
Padres recibirán la carta Ausente Sin Permiso #1 después que el estudiante tenga tres (3) faltas sin permiso en un año escolar.
Si el problema continua, la PSA hará una visita a la casa del estudiante para determinar necesidad de intervención.
La carta Ausente Sin Permiso #2 será mandada a los estudiantes que tengan más de cinco (5) faltas sin permiso. Una conferencia con los padres será programada para hablar sobre la asistencia y/o llegadas tarde y un contrato será echo para asegurarnos que la asistencia del estudiante mejore.
Si un estudiante tiene nueve (9) faltas sin permiso, el /ella será considerado AUSENTE SIN PERMISO de manera habitual y la carta Ausente Sin Permiso #3 será mandada a los padres.
Si la asistencia escolar del estudiante no mejora, el caso se referirá a la Junta de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar (SARB, por sus siglas en inglés).

Póliza de Reconocimiento de Asistencia

Todos los estudiantes que cumplan con el criterio para Asistencia Perfecta recibirán una medalla la última semana del año escolar.

Estuvo inscrito y presente el primer día de clases.
No falto a la escuela y No llego tarde.
Las excursiones escolares aprobadas por el director de la escuela no se consideraran como faltas en el registro de asistencia escolar del alumno.
Los alumnos que participaron en el programa de estudio independienteno cumplirán con los requisitos.

Los estudiantes con asistencia perfecta durante cada mes recibirán reconocimiento y un certificado en laasamblea de premios mensuales.

Los estudiantes con asistencia de 96% o más tendrán su nombre en el Pisaron de Asistencia.
