Did-Next-Now Strategy

DID-NEXT-NOW STRATEGY

Instructions: Self-instruction involves stating, out loud each step in a task while completing the step. The following is an example of using one type of self-instruction: The Did-Next-Now Strategy.

·  Identify the task: Clean off the table.

·  Identify the steps in completing the task:

1.  Take the clean-up cart to the table.

2.  Put dishes and silverware on the cart.

3.  Put napkins in the trash.

4.  Get the washcloth wet in the soapy water on the cart.

5.  Wipe the table clean.

·  Use the Did-Next-Now Strategy by stating each action of the step - out loud - while completing it:

Did: I have the cart for cleaning the table. (The step just completed.)

Next: I need to take the dishes and silverware off the table. (The next step to perform.)

Now: I am going to pick up the dishes and silverware. (The step that is going to be completed.)

·  Reinforce each step completed with a statement such as, “I did what I said I would do.”

·  If a step is not completed, a correction procedure can be put into the same self-instructional sequence. For example:

Did: I picked up some of the dishes.

Next: I need to pick up all of the dishes.

Now: I’m going to pick up all of the dishes.

DID-NEXT-NOW SCRIPT

DID: State what response was just completed.

NEXT: Identify what response needs to be done next.
