#DHSTV November 2016 Update - Transcript

This month,White Ribbon Day, what to do if you’re planning an overseas holiday andinformation for people preparing to study next year.

G’day, I’m Hank Jongen, General Manager, Department of Human Services here to tell you what’s happening with the department in November.

----

White Ribbon Day takes place later this month and last year I took the oath to speak out and act to prevent men's violence against women.

But it’s also a good reminder that we support all people affected by family and domestic violence.

Family and domestic violence is unacceptable in any form, be it violent, threatening, coercive, controlling or intimidating.

We can help by providing information, resources and referrals.

We also have social workers that offer free counselling, support and information about payments and services within your community that may assist you.

And if you or anyone in your family is in immediate danger please call triple-0.

----

We’re almost at the end of the year, and for some of us a holiday may be just around the corner.

If you’re planning any overseas travel during this time it’s a good idea to check in with us and find out if, or how, this may affect your payment.

This can be easily done online with your Centrelink account through myGov.

Also, if you’re taking medicines purchased under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme on your overseas trip—rememberit’s illegal to take or send these medicines out of Australia if they’re not for your personal use, or the use of someone travelling with you.

And it’s always a good idea before you leave to register your travel details with Smartraveller.

----

If you’re thinking of studying or training next year you may be eligible for Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY.

Eligibility is based on your age, the course you are studying, your income and assets, and where you’ll be living.

If you are eligible, it’s better to claim early, you can claim up to 13 weeks before your course is due to start.

We’ve got lots of information on eligibility and tutorials about how to claim on our website and you can follow Student Update on Facebook and Twitter where you can ask us any questions you may have.

----

And finally, this year I’ll be taking part inMovember. You can check my “mobro” fundraising page and follow me on Facebook and Twitter to track my progress and find out more about how the department is supporting this and other great causes!
