Dhanush Bharadwaj and Khushi M Hombal Champions

Karnataka State Under 9 Boys and Girls Chess Championship 2013organized by Chess Shoots under thebanner of United Karnataka Chess Associationfrom 17th - 19th May2013 at Conference Hall, State Youth Center, Bangalore concluded today.

In boys’ category, 103 players participated from all the parts of Karnataka out of which 3 were International Rated players. Mr. Dhanush Bharadwaj of Bangalore was the top seed with ELO Rating 1593 followed by Lakshwant of Bangalore (1216), Komal Srivatsav Sajja (1149) of Bangalore. In girls section, totally 36 players participated. Ms. Khushi M Hombal of Bhadravathi was top seed with ELORating 1171

Top Seed Dhanush Bharadwaj clinched the Karnataka State Under 9 Open Chess Championship with a round to spare and remained undefeated in the tournament. The penultimate round was the highlight of the championship with a hard fought game played between Komal S Sajja and Dhanush. The game remained quiet for a very long time and Komal made a slightly inaccurate move in the middle game. Dhanush converted the tiny advantage into a victory in a long endgame. Prajeet Singh Rawat of Bangalore secured 2nd place by scoring 7 points of a possible 9. He played really well to surpass the other 2 seeds.

In the distaff section, top seed Khushi M Hombal lived up to the expectations by winning the championship in style. She remained unbeaten throughout the championship and scored 6.5 point out of 7 rounds.

The surprise packet of the championship was undoubtedly Nidhi Shenoy of Mangalore. She scored 6 points out of 7 rounds. Even she remained unbeaten in the tournament. Spandana M Raikar of Shivamogga and Ananya Arumbakkam of Bangalore finished third and fourth respectively.
