SCHOOLS

Girls Cricket

Year 8 students at Didcot Girls School have enjoyed six weeks of cricket coaching, delivered by Moreton CC, on behalf of The Oxfordshire Cricket Board. This programme is funded by The Cricket Foundation, the largest UK school sports charity, and is designed to rejuvenate cricket in state schools. It has been a phenomenal success, with Didcot Girls School being a prime example.18 girls attended the coaching over a 6 week period, of which only two were playing regular cricket. Their hard work paid off when they won the Oxfordshire “Chance to Compete” softball competition at Horspath, as reported in last week’s Newsletter.

They went on to play a hard ball T20 match against St Helen’s & St Katherine’s School from Abingdon, who are equally keen to develop cricket for their girls. Hosted at Moreton CC, for many it was their first taste of “proper” cricket, and they rose to the challenge magnificently. These well matched teams were “nip and tuck” for most of the match, which featured a 50 partnership between the St Helen’s openers. Momentum swung decisively Didcot’s way in the 15th over of the St Helen’s innings, in which four wickets fell to Georgia Haworth, all clean bowled, including a hat trick.

In the schools competitions, Lord Williams (Thame) are challenging for the Under-15 Premier League title after two close wins They bowled Wood Green (Witney) out for 44 but then struggled to 45 for 8 which did not help their run rate, which could be decisive . They chasedthe Bartholomew (Eynsham)score of 66 all out more impressively finishing on 69-2.

In the Under-15 League, Burford need to beat Wood Green convincingly next week to level the table on points and leave run rate as the decider. Meanwhile Marlborough(Woodstock) reached the final of the second tier championship, scoring 150 for 1 with Tyron Eyles scoring 107 not out. Henry Box (Witney) replied with 107 for 6. Marlborough also overcame Warriner’s (Bloxham) 59 – 7 for a seven wicket win. They will face St. Birinus (Didcot) who played Cheney (Headington) for a second time as a decider in a group decimated by postponements. Cheney scored 96 for 9 and St.Birinus were 22 for 1 and ahead on run rate when rain stopped play.

UNDER-15 LEAGUE

Marlborough 150 – 1 (Tyron Eyles 107no); Henry Box 107 – 6

Warriner 59 – 7; Marlborough 62 – 3

Cheney 96 – 9; St. Birinus 22 – 1 (rain stopped play, St. Birinus win on run rate)

In the Under-13 Cup semi-finals, an unbeaten half century from George Tait was not enough to prevent Warriner going down by four wickets to Lord William’s. In the other semi-final, Jack Romanek’s 67 saw Burford to 122 for 5 against Cherwell and this proved just enough for a five run victory.

In the Under-13 League semi finals, Aaron McCreadie’s 44 saw Bartholomew to 126 for 2 against Gosford Hill who were restricted to 86 for 4 in reply. The other semi-final saw Cherwell overcome Oxford Spires by four wickets.

In the Under-17 Cup semi-finals Burford’s 174 for 8was enough for a win over Bartholomew. Jack Davies with 56 and Matt Doe with 36 were the bases if Burford’s innings, Tom Perkins picking up 3 for 18. Bartholomew were dismissed for 126 in reply, Jamie Nelson returning 3 for 21.Burford play Lord William’s in the final.
