Proposal Name / Paramedic Program
Brief Description
(one or two sentences) / Provide advanced life support training to Emergency Medical Services personnel.Develop and implement a paramedic program.
Years on Priority List
(5 points) / This is the first year
What will be achieved?
(10 Points) / This program will provide advanced training for those students working in the field of Emergency Medicine.
Justification: Why should this be done?
(20 points) / This institution provides an Emergency Medical Technician /Basic (EMTB/1) program.
Providing a Paramedic program will allow the students to advance their careers. This is the next step in the field of EMS. At this time there is a significant shortage of EMS field responders. According to recent studies by the year 2012 there will be a 50% deficit in EMS personnel. This means there will not be enough EMTs and Paramedics to respond to the 911 emergency system needs or fill the positions in other areas where this training is required such as hospitals, amusement parks and education. This is attributed to many factors. A significant factor is the burnout rate is very high with EMS responders due to the human factor. It is their job responsibilities to provide immediate medical care to the sick and injured often in unpredictable or dangerous circumstances.
College Goals and/or Objective(s) & Student Learning.
(30 points) / A Paramedic program will increase the college Technologies programs while meeting a need in the community. Other community colleges offering paramedic training have from 2 year to 4 year waiting lists. At this time the students in our area have to travel up to 200 miles to obtain this training.
Students entering the Paramedic program will be required to obtain specific prerequisites prior to being accepted into the program.
Does this proposal fulfill a mandate? / No, not at this time.
Does this proposal address a safety issue? / Yes, there must be sufficient qualified manpower provided for the Emergency medical system to meet our community needs.
Will this proposal benefit other areas of the college? / This proposal will benefit other areas of the college because the students will be required to meet specific reading, math and science standards prior to acceptance into the program.
Will this proposal impact or require accommodations from other areas? / Accommodations from other Divisions would not be required, however, cooperation and involvement would certainly enhance the students learning
experience.
