Interior Design Student Association (IDSA) Constitution

Article I - Name

There is a large active student organization called the Interior Design Student Association (IDSA). This association has two liaisons to two major interior design professional societies: the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). This organization is based on the Iowa State University Campus and membership shall be open to all registered students at IowaStateUniversity.

Article II - Purposes of Organization

The purposes of the Organization are as follows:

  1. To promote high ethical and design standards.
  2. To benefit the membership of the Organization by providing an exchange of ideas, a common meeting ground for understanding, cooperation and education and an opportunity to keep abreast of development in interior design.
  3. To promote interaction with professional interior designers and interior design organizations.
  4. To undertake such programs and activities as may be proper to promote and enhance educational development.
  5. To link this organization to the American Society of Interior Designers and the International Interior Design Association.

Interior Designer Student Association abides by and supports established IowaStateUniversity policies, State and Federal Laws.

Article III - Members

Membership shall be open to all registered students at IowaStateUniversity pursuing a degree in interior design or with an interest in interior design. Membership shall be granted upon submission of a completed application to the Secretary. As a member, one is required to attend organization meetings regularly, pay dues if required, and actively support organization projects.

VOTING: Members shall be entitled to vote in all matters coming before the membership.

RESIGNATION: Any member may resign from the Organization by giving written notice to the President of the Organization. Resignation shall not relieve the member so resigning of the obligation to pay any dues, assessments or other charges theretofore accrued and unpaid.

REMOVAL: Membership will be revoked by ¾ votes from the general membership and officers, if actions are deemed inappropriate by the membership.

Article IV - Officers

The officers of the Organization shall be a President, a Vice-President, a Liaison to ASID, a Liaison to IIDA, a Secretary, a Treasurer, a Representative from each class, a Design Council Representative, a Advisory Board Representative and two Publicity Co-Chairs.

The officers of this organization must meet the following requirements:

- (a) Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) as stated below and meet that minimum cumulative GPA in the semester immediately prior to the election/appointment, the semester of election/appointment and semesters during the term of office. For undergraduate students, the minimum GPA is 2.00. In order for this provision to be met, at least six hours (half-time credits) must have been taken for the semester under consideration.

- (b) Be in good standing with the university and enrolled: at least half time (six or more credit hours), if an undergraduate student (unless fewer credits are required to graduate in the spring and fall semesters) during the term of office, and at least half time (four or more credits), if a graduate level student (unless fewer credits are required in the final stages of their degree as defined by the Continuous Registration Requirement) during their term of office.

- Be ineligible to hold an office should the student fail to maintain the requirements as prescribed in (a) and (b).

ELECTION TO OFFICE:Election of officers/adviser will require a majority vote from the general membership. If a candidate fails to receive a majority of votes, a run off election will be held with the top two candidates that received the most votes. Members interested in becoming an officer must meet academic requirements as established by the Student Organization Recognition Policy.

TERM OF OFFICE: The officers/adviser of the organizationshall be elected by the voting members at the last meeting of the spring semester, and begin their duties at the conclusion of the meeting. Each officer/adviser shall hold office until his or her successor shall have been duly elected. No person shall be candidate for office without his or her prior consent.

VACANCIES: A vacancy in any office shall be filled by the executive committee for the unexpired portion of the term.

OFFICER/ADVISER REMOVAL: Officers/adviser may be removed from office by ¾ votes from the general membership and other officers, if actions are deemed inappropriate by the membership. The officer/adviser is permitted to speak before the Executive Committee and the general membership about the charges made concerning his/her performance. The officer/adviser is not permitted to participate in the deliberation of the Executive Committee regarding the charges.

OFFICER DUTIES:

President:The President shall be the principal elected officer of the Organization and shall in general direct all of the business and affairs of the Organization. The President shall preside at all meetings of the Organization. The President may appoint standing committees, ad-hoc committees, and their respective chairmen. The president shall maintain communication with the organization advisor. The president shall ensure that the organization is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by the IowaStateUniversity and StudentActivitiesCenter.

Vice President: In the absence of the President or in the event of the President's inability or refusal to act, the Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President and, when so acting, shall have all of the powers and be subject to all of the restrictions upon the President.

Liaison to ASID: Will have the duty of being the official liaison between the Organization and ASID. It will be his/her responsibility to communicate information from ASID and to promote interaction with ASID.

Liaison to IIDA: Will have the duty of being the official liaison between the Organization and IIDA. It will be his/her responsibility to communicate information from IIDA and to promote interaction with IIDA.

Secretary: The Secretary shall keep the minutes of the meetings of the members and of the meetings of the Executive Committee; see that all notices are duly given; be custodian of the Organization records; keep a register of the addresses of each member which shall be furnished to the secretary by such member; maintain current registration with ISU Student Organizations.

Treasurer: The Treasurer shall keep an account of all money received and expended by the Organization and shall make disbursements authorized by the executive committee. All sums received shall be deposited in the Campus Organizations account.

Class Representative: A representative from the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes shall act as liaisons between the Organization and the classes.

Design Council Representative: Two representatives shall act as liaisons between the Interior Design Student Organization and the Design Council.

Advisory Board Representative:The Advisory Board Representative is the contact source between the IDSA and the ISU Interior Design faculty. This meant to encourage members to express concerns or suggestions for Interior Design faculty.

Publicity Co-Chairs. This position is held by 2 persons. Their duty is to promote the late

summer / early fall membership drive. Also throughout the year they must provide information about meetings, activities, or events to IDSA members through posted signs (throughout the College of Design and the Armory), mailings, emails, and/or announcement in studios.

Adviser: Advisors shall act in a non-voting advisory capacity to the Organization. Advisors shall consist of one faculty member, one Professional Member of ASID, and one Professional Member of IIDA. They maintain communication and meet with the officer(s) regularly. The faculty adviser is aware of all financial expenditures and has the power to approve or decline. The faculty adviser also ensures that the organization is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by the IowaStateUniversity and StudentsActivitiesCenter.

Article V - Finances

All finances of this organization will be handled by the Treasurer. If the organization is dissolved all monies shall go to the Design Council to be distributed amongst other design organizations.

“All monies belonging to this organization shall be deposited and disbursed through a bank account established for this organization at the Campus Organizations Accounting Office and/or approved institution/office (must receive authorization via Campus Organizations Accounting Office). All funds must be deposited within 24 hours after collection. The adviser to this organization must approve and sign each expenditure before payment.”

The annual organization dues for all members of the organization will be due at the time application for membership is submitted. Other assessments, if any, shall be determined from time to time by the current organization officers.

Each member will be required to affiliate with at least one national interior design organization of their choice. Any student membership dues for such organization shall be paid by the member. National interior design organizations shall include ASID and IIDA.

Article VI –Amendments & Ratification

This constitution may be amended and subsequently ratified at any time, with the unanimous approval of the President, Vice-President, and Treasurer and with a simple majority of the membership, not counting abstainers. Members will be given one week to consider amendments. The changes must be voted on and approved by the general membership of the organization. Amended or ratified constitution will be submitted within 10 days to the StudentActivitiesCenter for approval.

Interior Design Student Association (IDSA) Bylaws

• Membership

• Officers

President and vice president positions should be elected each spring semester and the positions will be held through the next academic year.

All other offices, (secretary, treasurer, publicity chairs, design council representatives, ASID liaison and IIDA liaison shall be elected each fall and the position shall be held through that academic year.

• Meetings

The organization shall hold regular (bi-weekly) meetings during the academic term except when holidays, examination periods or other events make meeting impractical. Organization meeting day/time will be determined in the beginning of each semester by a ¾ vote of the general membership. Attendance at organization meetings is expected. If a member must miss a meeting, correspondence with the secretary is appreciated. A quorum shall consist of a simple majority of the membership plus one officer. Notification of all organization meetings must be given 2 weeks ahead of scheduled time.

Financial Procedures

IDSA dues shall be $20.00 per semester, and deposited by the Treasurer.

Any checks collected by the club must be deposited within two weeks, or the check shall be returned.

Any financial transaction must be previously approved by the treasurer and/or advisor

Amendment Procedures

The power to alter, amend, or repeal the Bylaws or adopt new bylaws shall be vested in the elected officers and the membership and can be done at any meeting. Any changes require the approval of the faculty advisor.
