Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Report Summer 2016 (DLHE)

Destinations information relating to those who left the University during 2014-15

Compiled following the University’s formal return to the Higher Education Statistics Agency 20th April 2016 – Prepared by Senior DLHE Officer, Lynsey Williams

1.  Introduction

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) report has been compiled during the summer of 2016 following the formal submission of the DLHE return to the Higher Education Statistic Agency (HESA) on 20th April 2016, following the January 2016 survey period. Compiled by the Careers Service, a separate version of this report with additional policy information is made available to university staff.

Details of Destinations are provided in the Appendices section, by Faculty and then by Further Education College Partner.

It is recommended that students consider the information contained within this report version as part of a wider careers advice and guidance provision made through the Careers Service and through Faculties, and are discouraged from making career decisions purely on the information provided.

Appendices – Destinations by Faculty and Further Education College

The details provided below are split by Faculties (Appendices 1 to 5), schools split within each Faculty and programmes listed within schools. Destinations relating directly to Pembrokeshire College and Coleg Sir Gar students are listed in Appendices 6 & 7 following the five UWTSD Faculties.

Before referring to the actual destinations information listed in the appendices please take a minute to read the notes listed below:

1.  Destinations details are provided where the leaver is employed or studying, along with highlighting the total number of leavers who responded for each subject. No reference is made where the leaver explicitly refused to respond, is unemployed, is doing something else, or where no response was received. Note that the overall unemployment figure for UWTSD Leavers is 6%.

2.  The scope and limitations placed on us for the information gathering stage limits what we can collect and report. The responses provided relate to the data collected according to HESA rules and data requirements and is taken from the actual HESA return as opposed to hard copy forms. As such reference to data outside the HESA DLHE return is not included e.g. “returning to study in the next Academic Year” etc.

3.  Job/Course Destinations are listed as they were provided by the Leaver/Third Party and as such there may be some title variation e.g. ‘PGCE Secondary – PGCE Secondary English with QTS – PGCE’.

4.  Leavers and third parties may provide basic information only, without providing the necessary additional information e.g. using ‘Secondary School’ instead of ‘Secondary School Maths Teacher’ or ‘MA’ as opposed ‘MA Education’. In such instances this is quoted as ‘Not Specified’.

5.  There are some instances where leavers have completed the survey via the online system or hard copy questionnaire and have stated that they are undertaking further study, detailing the course that they studied previously, e.g. in the data in the Appendices it may show one or more people having completed a BA Business Management course, who have stated that they are undertaking further study, this being a BA Business Management course. This does not necessarily mean that the leaver(s) are still studying the course, it may have been a misinterpretation of the question by the leaver. The data we return to HESA must be that provided by the leaver (or third party). If we are unable to re-contact the leaver to clarify any possible discrepancies then the information provided by the leaver is returned.

6.  Current employment destination does not necessarily reflect actual employability. For many leavers reporting employment in non-graduate level jobs, or part time jobs, the data reported may not reflect the full picture or context:

·  e.g. many non-Graduate level jobs have been taken by leavers to support themselves financially whilst continuing further study, or with the intention of saving up for further study, and the vast majority of further study is at degree level or above.

·  e.g. many leavers have chosen to take up part time positions to provide flexibility around further study, or to fit around childcare or similar commitments.

·  e.g. a leaver looking to enter for example the Counselling profession may have taken a lower level job or part time work in order to set aside time to undertake voluntary work / counselling in order to gain experience or exposure to that role and gain additional counselling hours before they are in a position to apply for a position in this field. Whilst the survey results would report this as a lower level of Graduate Employability as they reflect on what the leaver is doing six months after leaving, this approach may lead the leaver into graduate level employment. At present this form of career development would be more evident in the Longitudinal Survey undertaken by HESA up to three and a half years after the leaver has left their HE Provider.
