Levers pulleys gears
Making life easier! / Children should access everyday applications of levers, pulleys and gears by using and observing for example, nutcrackers, rotary whisks, hand drills, tin openers, tongs, as well as looking at seesaws, bicycles, and applications on a building site. Fair test multiply pulleys, collecting numerical data / Mechanisms
* Use bradawl to mark hole positions
* Use hand drill to drill tight and loose fit holes
* Cut strip wood, dowel, square section wood accurately to 1mm
* Join materials using appropriate methods
* Use a cam to make an up and down mechanism
* Understand mechanical systems: gears, pulleys, cams, levers, linkages / * Justify decisions about materials
and methods of construction.
* Reflect on work and how well the
design fits the needs of the user
Aut 1 / Space
· Design and make a moon buggy that can be controlled remotely / Construction
* Incorporate motor and switch into a model
* Control a model using an ICT control programme
* Select tools to cut, shape, join, finish
* Use mechanical systems in products
/ * Identify what does and does not
work in the product
* Make suggestions as to how the
design could be improved
Sum1 / China
· Chinese cuisine / · Investigate ingredients used in Chinese cooking / Food
* Prepare food products taking into account properties of
ingredients and sensory characteristics
* Select and prepare food for a particular purpose
* Taste a range of ingredients, food items to develop a sensory food
vocabulary for use when designing
* Weigh and measure using scales
* Cut and shape ingredients using appropriate tools and equipment
* Work safely and hygienically / Evaluate and give constructive feedback to others
Sum2 / Trade Routes
· Design and make a bridge that will hold a toy car / · Sketch and model alternative ideas
· Combine modelling and drawing to refine ideas
· Use models, kits and drawings to help formulate design ideas
· Make prototypes
· Use found information to inform decisions
· Draw plans that can be read by others / Construction
* Join materials using appropriate methods
* Build frameworks using a range of materials e.g. wood, card,
* Strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures / * Justify decisions about
materials and methods of
construction
* Identify what does and does
not work in the product
*Make suggestions as how
designs could be improved
