I am delighted that you have expressed an interest in working at Rye Hills Academy. We are looking to appoint a Technician who work within the Academy’s Design and Technology Department. Experience of working with students would be an advantage.

With this letter you will find a person specification, job description and some details about the post. We have tried to keep the amount of paper we send out to a minimum but feel free to contact us if there is anything else you need.

Responsibilities include:

Salary is paid monthly. We may on occasions ask the successful candidate to attend meetings, events, etc., beyond their normal working hours, but this will always be by negotiation and in such circumstances we will either offer time off in lieu or overtime.

I have attached a person specification which sets out in summary form the ideal type of person we are looking for. However, we all know the world is not perfect, so please do not be deterred from applying if you think you can do a good job for us but you don’t fit the criteria exactly! Potential applicants should note that as the post will focus around work with young people, a full DBS check and medical check will be carried out before appointment can be confirmed. The successful applicant will also be required to undertake training in the academy’s safeguarding procedures on appointment.

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING / Level 2 standard of education, ideally with GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English and Maths(there will be a literacy and numeracy test on the day of the interview). / Post –16 Education to at least Level Three standard with professional qualification in a relevant area (e.g., careers, guidance, counselling, youth work, etc.)
Evidence of recent training to update skills.
Child Protection training
ICT qualifications.
EXPERIENCE / Experience of working with young people in a school environment.
Experience of working in an area that requires both the use of initiative and a clear understanding of systems and procedures. / Knowledge of the various design and technology disciplines.
Previous experience working in a similar role.
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES / An ability to work with children of all ages and abilities in this 11-16 academy.

Principal Responsibilities:To work within the Design and Technology Department.Undertaking the generic responsibilities of a whole term technician based in the Design and Technology department.

Contractual Arrangements:The post is subject to the National Conditions of Service as they apply to support staff employed in academies, plus any other contractual arrangements that may be mutually agreed.

Hours:37 hours a week, whole time

Monday – Thursday 0800 – 1630 This includes a thirty-minute lunch break

Friday 0800 - 1600

Generic Responsibilities:

All employees have a responsibility for adherence to statutory requirements and current academy policies, particularly as they relate to the following areas:

Observation and implementation of any regulations and procedures pertaining to Health and Safety;

Observation and implementation of academy and statutory procedures relating to the welfare of students particularly in the area of child protection;

Observation and implementation of procedures relating to looked after children, those with SEND and those covered by legislation such as the Equality Act 2010;

Observation of academy and statutory procedures relating to the use of ICT equipment, software and the Internet;

Compliance with statutory requirements on Data Protection and Freedom of Information, and observation of good practice in the maintenance of confidentiality as it applies to the activities of the academy, students, staff and governors;

Participation at an appropriate level in the academy’s systems of Performance Management and Continuing Professional Development;

The maintenance of professional ethics, courtesy, and behaviour in any dealings with colleagues, students, parents, governors, visitors, and the general public, be this verbal, written, by phone or electronically.

Responsibilities specific to the post:

Where reference is made "equipment" or "materials" it should be read as referring to Design and Technology equipment and materials.

To support teachers and students working in the area through the provision in lessons of equipment, materials and teaching aids as required.

To assist in the upkeep of inventories of equipment in accordance with current academy and auditing requirements.

To ensure that all materials and equipment are stored, accounted for and maintained in accordance with current Health and Safety legislation, and the principles of good housekeeping / security. Where damage or breakdown occurs, to repair equipment if the necessary skills and / or certification are possessed - if not, to make appropriate arrangements for repair at the direction of the Line manager.

To manage departmental stores, monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and delivery schedules.

To carry out routine maintenance and servicing of specialist equipment and oversee similar work carried out by external contractors. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all such maintenance and servicing in line with department, academy and any relevant legislative requirements.

To liaise with the Site Management Team regarding any premises issues relating to the D&T area.

To maintain ICT-based systems of student performance and similar data as required by the Head of Department and Assistant Head of Department.

Where required, to offer technical and practical support to staff and students.

At all times to have full and constant regard for current Health and Safety legislation, COSHH provision and any in-house requirements. Where potential hazards exist or are seen, to report these without delay to the line manager or the most senior member of department staff available.

In any dealings with students to have regard to the requirement to present as an appropriate role model.

Where required, to assist in the administrative preparation for, and the invigilation / supervision of internal and external exams.

To take a pro-active role in terms of the maintenance and acquisition of relevant certification and competencies, in particular those pertaining to Health & Safety.

At the direction of the Head of Department, to assist teachers by working with them in the classroom to provide support for the students in practical activities by dealing with routine queries, offering advice, monitoring safety aspects, providing help relevant to the subject and so forth.

To oversee routine operation of the department ICT suite, managing bookings and liaising with ICT support staff as necessary, to ensure equipment is ready for use. This includes ensuring that reprographics and printing facilities are serviceable and paper stocks replenished.

To mount and display presentations, boards, etc., as requested, any time consumption involved to be by negotiation with the Head of Department.

To undertake various repair and maintenance schedules in Design and Technology and elsewhere as required by the Head of Department and/or Director of Operations during the academy holidays.
