Design a Species Genetics Project

TEKS 6F:Predict possible outcomes of various genetic combinations such as monohybrid crosses, dihybrid crosses and non-Mendelian inheritance;

TEKS 6G:Recognize the significance of meiosis to sexual reproduction;

Objective: Genetics follows certain rules, as illustrated by Punnett squares, principles of dominance and recessiveness, and rules related to the location of alleles on the chromosomes. In animals, such as mice, certain traits are expressed in predictable ways. In this project, you are going to design your own imaginary species, create traits for the species that follow genetic rules that you have studied, and create a model of your species. You will be responsible for creating both parents (Mom and Dad) and the offspring of your species.

Your final project should have the following elements:

  1. Family of three that exhibits at least five (5) traits
  1. Description and sketch of each of the traits that your species will exhibit, listing genotypes and phenotypes for each *list must include which traits are dominant and which are recessive*
  1. Punnett squares to show which traits the offspring will inherit from the parent creatures
  1. A dihybrid cross using two of the traits that your species has
  1. Five (5) practice problems using any of the traits that your species exhibits *these should be word problems* DO NOT JUST WRITE Bb X bb

Design a Species Genetics ProjectRubric

Unsatisfactory (1 pts) / Satisfactory (3 pts) / Excellent (5 pts)
Sketches and Description / Some do not follow genetics “rules”, pictures not clear / Follows genetics rules, pictures are small or lacking in creativity or effort / Follows genetics rules, pictures are drawn large and clearly. Colored.Creative.
Species Models / Genotype doesn’t follow phenotype, model not included, poorly put together or messy / Genotype follows phenotype, all traits included, model somewhat unclear or not neat / Genotype follows phenotype, modelis created neatly and creatively, and colored
Dihybrid Cross / Punnett square not set up correctly, phenotypic ratios not given or incorrect / Punnett square set up correctly, minor errors in counting and ratios / Square set up correctly, phenotypic ratios given correctly
Practice Problems / Less than 5 problems given, more than 1 is impossible to solve / 5 problems given, somewhat unclear or unsolvable / All 5 problems are written well and can be solved
