“I’m Board”

Board Game Design

A board game is a game played with counters or pieces that are placed on, removed from, or moved across a "board" (a pre-marked surface, usually specific to that game). Simple board games often make ideal "family entertainment" since they are often appropriate for all ages. Some board games, such as chess have intense strategic value and have been classics for centuries. (wikipedia.org)

There are many different types and classifications of board games. Some are simplified situations of real life. These are popular as they can intermingle make-believe and role playing along with the game. Popular games of this type include Monopoly, which is a rough simulation of the real estate market, Clue, which is based upon a murder mystery, and Risk which is one of the most well known of thousands of games attempting to simulate warfare and geo-politics.

Other games do not at all, attempt to imitate reality. These include abstract strategy games like chess and checkers, word games such as Scrabble, and trivia games such as Trivial Pursuit.

More recently, you may have noticed the influence of technology on board games. Many board games are now accompanied with battery operated devices such as timers, buzzers, or gadgets that light up or spit cards in your face. There also seems to be an increase in the number of board games that use interactive media such as trivia games that might include a DVD with song or movie snipits.

Assignment Requirements:

To complete this TAE you must create an original board game and pass in the following components on or before the due date. Late submissions will not be given a grade.

1.  The rules of the game. These should be typed up and formatted in a professional manner. Include graphics, borders, etc. where appropriate.

2.  The board itself. You DO NOT include game pieces. Your prototype can be constructed using various materials including cardboard, Bristol board, wood, Styrofoam, etc. but you are the one responsible for obtaining these supplies. If you are having difficulty obtaining suitable board materials, there is a limited supply of corrugated cardboard in the Design 11 classroom and you may approach you teacher for a piece. There is a cost to this decision however – a 10-point deduction on your final project mark. Corrugated cardboard IS NOT the desired building material for this project, mainly due to the lack of aesthetics and structural stability. THE GAME BOARD MUST BE CONSTRUCTED IN CLASS.

3.  If the game includes action or question cards, please type up the actions and/or questions – do not submit the cards. However, you will need to sketch what different cards would look like.

4.  Detailed sketches for THE BOARD, ALL GAME PIECES, CARDS, DICE, ETC. As per previous Design 11 projects, the sketches must include measurements. The sketch of the board must be on 11”X17” paper but all other sketches should be done on 8.5”X11” plain white paper and must be clearly labeled and include your full name and date in the bottom right hand corner.

5.  An original logo for your new product is required, along with the explanation of this logo. Your logo must be sketched on plain white paper and then coloured appropriately. You must type up your explanation and attach it to the sketch.

6.  Justification – In a typed, double spaced document, answer the following questions:

a.  Why did you choose this particular idea for a board game?

b.  Is there a need for a product like this in the marketplace? Explain.

c.  Why did you give the product the particular name you chose? (A name is a huge piece of the product’s identity).

d.  4-P analyses (product, place, price, promotion) – see handout for more information.

e.  A written description of the target market (demographic analysis)

7.  A blank survey intended to test the game with a focus group. This survey should have no less than 10 questions and should be typed up.
