What would a positive skew of these psych scores look like? What does it mean?

3.______Image from

The first column for each group represents completion of “easy task” (light color) and the second column for each group represents completion of a “difficult task” (dark). One group of subjects worked alone while another worked in front of an attentive audience.

Conclusions? What is independent and dependent variable?

Possible responses (TEACHER KEY)

/ 1. Scatterplot
Shows a positive correlation. That is, the more hours watched daily, the more ratings of aggression (by teachers)
OR
The less hours of tv watched daily, the fewer ratings of aggression (by teachers)
/ 2. Frequency histogram
In a frequency histogram, the y-axis graphs the number of people or number of instances. The x-axis represents test grades in psychology.
From this graph, one can report a fairly normal distribution. One can report that the mode (most frequent score) was 82 (around 23-24 students scored this on their psychology exam). The standard deviationis 5 (average difference of scores). Could ask students to draw this data with a POSITIVE SKEWmeans that more people would have scored in the 60s (low) and a few pull average up. In a positive skew, the median is higher than the mode or most frequent number.
/ 3. Bar graph
When subjects were alone, they performed “easy tasks” (first column) slower than subjects who had an attentive audience watching them. One could also say the attentive audience group was faster with “easy tasks.” When subjects had an attentive audience, they took longer to perform a “difficult task” (second column). Or one can say those who are alone were quicker to complete a “difficult task.”
Could ask students to identify IV, DV.
IV: Condition of working alone OR with an attentive audience
DV: Time to complete task (in seconds)
/ 4. Scatterplot
Headline: “The more sugar people eat, the more likely they are to get cavities.”
Potential r value = +.7
+ (upward slope/positive) .7 (strong)
