There's lots of information in the Job Description itself but in brief we're looking for an experienced health or social care leader, operational and project manager who has experience of engaging and influencing key stakeholders in health and social care. You will have a demonstrable track record in successful change management. In achieving this you will have influenced multiple individuals, organisations and stakeholders while building positive and sustainable long-term relationships. You will be an excellent communicator and have a working understanding of strategic communications. You will be an excellent operational leader and manager, and you will be able to coach and develop a new highly functioning team to successfully implement key strategic objectives.

The Deputy Director Services - Influencing & Engagement, in partnership with the Deputy Director of Service Delivery, will play a key role in leading the strategic planning and implementation of the organisation’s service strategy. Working closely with the Director of Services and CEO, you will inform the direction for external engagement which is critical to delivery of the Services Team objectives.

Internal and cross departmental collaboration is critical to the successful delivery of the organisation’s strategy. Working in conjunction with other departmental Deputy Directors and Senior Management Team you will plan and implement the organisational strategy taking into account ongoing organisational change and development.

You will lead and manage an established team within a new structure which encompasses Education and Awareness, Policy and Quality. Each function is critical to the successful delivery of the Service Team’s strategic objectives and ultimately the charity’s ability to support all young people with cancer in the UK. To do this you will need to have a sound understanding of: outcome measures and their importance in demonstrating impact; the critical role of lobbying for policy or wider change, and an understanding of how focused and mass awareness campaigns can support change in behaviour and increased awareness.

As part of the Services Leadership Team,in partnership with other Deputy Directors and the Senior Management Team, you will help lead delivery and implement the key strategic objectives. You will oversee and project manage key initiatives in your team against a new performance framework. You will provide engaging and motivating leadership, coaching, management and development of all direct reports to ensure they are able to successfully deliver their objectives.

Specifically the Deputy Director of Influencing & Engagement post will ensure the day-to-day running of the team is managed consistently, enabling the Director to concentrate efforts on development of the service strategy and wider organisational development as part of the Senior Management Team.

You'll be someone who takes people with you rather than 'does change to them' but can still “cut to the chase” to solve problems. You'll also have the experience that means you can help the team prioritise the varied demands that get placed on them and you'll be adept at building relationships within organisations. Not worried about tackling barriers to implementation, you will need to be someone who relishes solving problems when they come up, values people, processes andrelationships, thrives when delivering results and is able to find simple, effective solutions to things that appear complex at first glance.

If you’re looking for a new challenge that will use your experience to implement an ambitious strategy that will help us deliver some remarkable services for young people with cancer then we need to talk.

OUR CULTURE

We’re a smaller organisation than most people think. Despite our recent growth in income and profile our total staff numbers is around 140 peopleand we also fund just over 50 clinical staff in the NHS. This means we are still small enough to make decisions quickly, seize opportunities when they arise and behave in an entrepreneurial but professional approach. It makes working for Teenage Cancer Trust exciting, vibrant and dynamic but it also means that if you are someone who prefers to be given an answer rather than help create the solution then you won't enjoy how we work.

We value collaboration over competition, see challenges as opportunities and welcome the views of everyone across the team. It doesn't matter how long you've worked here or what level your role is - you become one of the team immediately and your views, perspectives and opinions will matter.

The Senior Management Team is established, experienced, non-hierarchical and accessible – it makes a big difference to how we work and the potential we have to grow. They are backed and guided by an experienced and well established Trustee Board.

The charity has grown significantly in recent years - both in terms of income generation and service delivery for young people with cancer. Since 2008/09 we have increased our income year on year which has been matched by a growth in the development of units and services for young people. We are currently changing many of our processes, ways of working and systems to drive maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Our key focus is to increase income and maximise profit so we can spend more money on young people with cancer. We only support about half of young people with cancer and we have an ambitious plan to support all young people with cancer over the next 5 years.

All senior leaders in the Service Team have significant autonomy and freedom to act and what comes with that is a culture that focuses on accountability and not blame. As you might have gathered by now - we're also pretty honest, up-front and direct.

It's hard to get across what it is like to work at Teenage Cancer Trust without things sounding cheesy but we do see ourselves very much as a team. We are driven on by a commitment to seeing our hard work turn into direct results for young people with cancer. It's a pretty special place to be.

ABOUT THE SERVICES TEAM

We consider fundraising a key element to all our roles, as such we work very closely with our fundraising colleagues to ensure we share the responsibility of income generation. We also work hard to share our achievements acknowledging the impact that others have made, however big or small their contribution.

The growth of the Services Team has been rapid over the last 8 years andreflective of the impressive growth of Teenage Cancer Trust’s investment in young people’s cancer services. The Team has just gone through a significant re-structure to lay the foundation for future growth and expansion. While we are currently recruiting to a number of roles, the existing team is made up of an established group of highly committed professionals with an enormous sense of pride in their work. The group require leadership, guidance and support that matches their ambition and their commitment to delivering the organisational strategy.Skills development will come from bespoke training and education, while personal development will come through coaching and reflective practice.

ABOUT TEENAGE CANCER TRUST

We believe young people with cancer deserve the best treatment, care and support and everything we do is based on what is best for young people. We make sure they’re treated as young people first, cancer patients second, and we lead the world in the care of young people with cancer.

Together with these young people, their families and the passion of our supporters, we're challenging healthcare to improve and transform lives.Over 24 years we have learnt a lot about what it's like to be a young person with cancer and we understand their unique emotional, physical and practical needs.

Around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. Without Teenage Cancer Trust these young people are treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives. Being away from your normal life, friends and environment at such a vulnerable time is the last thing young people and their families need. They need expert treatment and support from the moment they hear the word ‘cancer’ and we’re the only charity dedicated to making this happen.

We bring young people together so they can be treated together, by teenage cancer experts, in the best place for them. Teenage Cancer Trust develops specialist wards (also called units) within NHS hospitals that bring young people together, to be treated and supported by Teenage Cancer Trust expertsin a place designed just for them.

We know providing a place that feels a bit more ‘normal’ helps young people cope with the devastation and chaos of cancer and its gruelling treatments. We know that our specialist nurses and youth support coordinators see young people as young people first and cancer patients second.

We are determined that every young person with cancer should have access to ourvital specialist support, no matter where they live in the UK.

OUR CHALLENGE

Currently for every young person we help, there’s another we can’t. We have to reach them all and we are the only people who can. Making this happen will mean many, many more specialist Teenage Cancer Trust nurses, more innovative models of care and will need us to raise more funds. We need to protect and grow the services we have developed through influencing and engaging policy makers, commissioners and providers in the NHS and Education so they do not lose sight of the needs of young people with cancer. We know there will be significant change in the NHS and Education systems and collectively we will need to navigate these changes whilst raising at least £80million over the next five years if we are to reach every young person who needs us.
