  1. TITLE: Women in Sport & Health Related Issues (Residential College Seminar)
  1. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: A course designed to provide the student with an opportunity to explore a stimulating topic in a small group setting within a residential college. Seminar topics will vary. Note: A maximum of two credit hours may be earned.

This Seminar topic “Women in Sport & Health Related Issues”is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to explore women in sport in a small group setting within a residential college. Each student will be responsible for selecting one elite female athlete from the past or present and direct learning & discussion on that woman and her impact on her sport and beyond. In addition, through the Women’s Sports Foundation, GoGirlGo curriculumwe will explore health-risk issues adolescent girls face today. Topics might includetolerance, body image, smoking, sex/dating, depression, civic duty, drugs, abuse, self-esteem, alcohol/partying, self-harm, sleep deprivation, financial literacy, family issues, etc.

  1. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Residential College Seminar is twofold. The first purpose is to explore and learn about elite female athletes and whattheirimpact is or was on theirsport and the world beyond her sport.In addition, the purpose is to explore health issues adolescent girls & athletes face. Any future coach or leader of teen girls, women in sport or women in other venues (YMCA, girls & boys clubs, Girl Scouts, after school programs…) would benefit greatly from this course.
  1. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  1. Identify elite female athletes & her sport (weekly discussion & quiz)
  2. Identify the elite female athlete’s impact on her sport (weekly discussion)
  3. Recognize adolescent girl’s health issues (activities)
  4. Select & design activities for teen girls around selected health issues (performance assessment)
  5. Lead an in-depth discussion of a health topic related to adolescent girl’s issue (performance assessment)
  6. Teach/lead an activity related to a selected elite female athlete (performance assessment)
  7. Teach/lead a discussion of an elite female athlete her impact on her sport (performance assessment)
  1. CONTENT OUTLINE:

Class participation (teen female health issues, elite female athlete)

Presentation & discussions of an elite female athlete

Lead & participate weekly in an educational activity related to health issues

Learn leadership skills for adolescent girls

Weekly calendar will be set once students in the course select topics the first week

  1. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
  1. Individual projects regarding elite female athletes
  2. Individual projects regarding teen health topics & issues
  3. Participation in weekly activities designed for teen girls in sports and activity programs to learn health topics and issues related to adolescent girls through elite female athlete stories.
  4. Seminar discussions we will learn how to lead teen girls in health topics related to adolescents.

  1. GRADING PROCEDURES:

Students will be graded on quizzes written by peers for their individual projects and two major individual projects they will lead during the seminar. The will also be graded on participation in the seminar health activity and elite female athlete discussion each week.
