TEACHING REQUIREMENT

Teaching Experience is required before completing the requirements for the Master’s degree. It may be satisfied through Ch St 230 Teaching Practicum elective, or through a Teaching Assistant appointment, or Teaching Associate appointment in the Chicana/o Studies Department.

LANGUAGE REQURIEMENT

The language requirement must be fulfilled during the first two years of the program and is required for completion of the M.A. The requirement may be satisfied in the following ways:

a) By passing a two-hour translation exam arranged by the Chicana and Chicano Studies Graduate Committee.
b) By presenting a transcript to prove either a BA or MA in the language in question.
c) By having studied in the language of a foreign country as a regular student or in a study abroad exchange for a
year at the university level.
d) By taking a language course specifically designed for graduate students and passing it with a B grade or better.

CAPSTONE REQUIREMENT

Based on the performance in the comprehensive final exam and a review of the dossier, the department will: (1) grant the M.A. degree and allow the student to continue to the Ph.D. phase of the graduate program; (2) award a terminal M.A.; or (3) not award the M.A. Students who receive a terminal M.A. will be given the opportunity to re-take the comprehensive exam and/or re-work their dossier by the end of the fall quarter following the end-of-the year review. The Faculty Exam Committee will administer and evaluate these exams, while the Department Graduate Committee will assess the revised dossiers.

The “M.A. Student Dossier” includes the following items: a selection of at least two seminar papers produced at UCSB; a department-generated unofficial transcript showing that all course requirements have been fulfilled; teaching evaluations; evidence of completion of the language and teaching experience requirements; and a brief (i.e. 3-5 page) statement of the student’s research area(s). The “M.A. Student Dossier” is submitted by the late spring quarter of the second year.

By the end of the second year, students must also pass a comprehensive examination administered by the Faculty Exam committee designated by the Department. The Faculty Exam Committee will include the three professors who taught the three core courses over a two-year cycle. The department chair will establish the committee, which may include other faculty members as well. Exams will be graded by the Faculty Exam Committee who wrote the exam.

The exam will cover the canon of Chicana and Chicano Studies (i.e., the intellectual content of the three core courses: CH ST 200A History and Narrativity, CH ST 200B Cultural Texts, and CH ST 200C Social Processes), and will include two questions per core course section (total of six questions) and an additional overall synthesis section (two questions) for a total of eight questions. Students will be required to respond to one question from each section for a total of four questions. The comprehensive examination will be administered over two days in which students will respond to two questions per day, and will have two hours to respond to each questions.

CONTINUATION TO THE Ph.D.

Although students are admitted into the M.A./Ph.D. program, continuation to the Ph.D. is by no means automatic upon completion of the M.A. Continuation is highly competitive and subject to the student’s academic performance being deemed excellent by all standards that the department uses to assess degree program such as: exams, grades, coursework, timely progress toward the degree, and teaching (as evidenced by student evaluations and supervisor’s assessments). Students must demonstrate an ability to work independently and to make innovative and original contribution to the critical literature of the student’s chosen field.
