PRACTICE B2.1: COMPUTER HARDWARE
NUMBER OF SESSIONS: 1
1. Open your favourite word processor program (Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer) and answer the following questions.
2. It is necessary to copy each question and answer it before going to the next one.
3. Choose the format for your document that you think is appropriate (font, titles, page header and footer, colours …).
4. Search the Internet for the information you need to answer the questions.
5. Save the document in your folder with the name “Computer HW.doc”
6. Once your teacher has corrected your answers, modify them and send the document by email to your teacher
There are 4 parts in the hardware in a computer:
A. Peripherals
B. Storage devices
C. CPU (processor)
D. Memory (RAM and ROM).
In 1st year – Technologies you will study the first two. The rest of them and how all the parts work together in a computer will be studied in 3rd year – Technologies.
A. COMPUTER PERIPHERALS
A.1 What are the peripherals for in a computer?
A.2 According to your definition, what peripherals has the computer you are working with?
A.3 For each of the peripherals in your computer, indicate if they are used to enter information into the computer, get information out of the computer or both things at the same time.
B. STORAGE DEVICES
B.1 What are the storage devices for in a computer?
B.2 According to your definition, list all the storage devices you think your computer has.
Open your browser, click on My Computer and choose the Details view, as it is shown in the following pictures:
B.3 How many hard disks does your computer have? What are their names?
B.4 Make a table showing the total capacity and the free space in each of the hard disks in your computer.
