basic sciences and be able to use this knowledge to interpret and describe problems

of architecture and building;

that characterise the course taken and be able to identify, formulate and resolve

problems of architecture and building through the use of up-to-date methods, techniques and instruments;

• have adequate knowledge of the aspects which concern the economic and technical viability, the calculation of costs and the production and construction process of architectonic and building structures, along with their safety aspects;

• be able to use planning techniques and instruments of architectonic and building constructions;

• be able to communicate effectively, in oral and written form, in at least one language of the European Union, in addition to Italian.

Specific educational goals of the course

The Bachelor’s degree course in Architectural Science has the specific educational aim to ensure graduates have an education relating to the planning of works in the field of architecture and town planning and correctly adapt and evaluate problems in construction and environmental control.

In the three years of study, the laboratories will be organised to deal with a number of different project areas:

- in the first year the fundamentals of construction and composition will be mainly experimented;

- in the second year the practices of representation and planning of construction systems and architectonic organisms of higher complexity will be further elaborated;

- in the third year the laboratories will focus on the problems associated with architecture in relation to the contexts of settlements, territory and landscape;

- the final laboratory will be a synthesis of the knowledge gained and develop it through drawings

of different characteristics according to the specificities of the subject.

Such a curriculum aims at suitably forming the graduate in order to deal with problems of analysis, representation, spatial configuration, building and architecture and the relations with urban and territorial contexts, also through the acknowledgement of educational activities carried out abroad. Among these latter, of principal interest will be the aspects connected to the Mediterranean in general and Sardinia in particular.

Graduates will hold credits that form the necessary requirement for access to Master’s degree courses aimed at forming architects and building-architectural engineers in accordance with the 85/384/CEE directive. The inclusion of University Credits (CFU) not constrained by the ministerial decree DM 270/2004 will furthermore provide the graduate with preliminary training that allows admission to Master’s degree courses in “Conservation of Architectonic and Cultural Heritage”.

Professional and occupational opportunities

Graduates in this class will carry out professional activities in a number of fields, contributing to and collaborating on activities of programming, planning and implementation of measures of organisation and transformation of the constructed environment on various scales. They will be able to practise this knowledge in institutions, public and private firms, engineering and architecture companies, industries in the sector and building firms, along with the freelance profession and consultancy.

The curricula covered by the classes (organised by the indispensable educational activities, the credits of which have been established pursuant to art.10 section 2 of the Ministerial Decree D.M 270/04, in view of their placing within the training of regulated professionals) conform to the

85/384/CEE directive, e relative recommendations. Graduates will hold credits that form the necessary requirement for access to Master’s degree courses aimed at forming architects and building-architectural engineers, in accordance with the 85/284/CEE directive.

Other than the competences covered in the “Educational aims of the class”, graduates are qualified for the occupational and professional opportunities as established by the Decree of the President of the Republic n.328 of 5 June 2001, that states the access to professional associations and states that

a graduate of a three year course in Architectural Science may enrol, via state examination, onto Section B of the professional association of Architects with the following fields of expertise:

• collaboration on activities of planning, project management, estimating and commissioning for building works, including public works;

• planning, project management, surveillance, measurement, accounting and liquidation concerning simple civic building, through the use of standardised methodologies;

• direct and instrument readings on present and pre-existing buildings.

Furthermore, they may carry out technical roles for institutions and public administrations (municipal, provincial and regional), and carry out technical tasks in public and private firms.
