SECTION 323119 – DECORATIVE METAL FENCES AND GATES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2SUMMARY

  1. Section includes ornamental picket fencing and gates.

1.3SUBMITTALS:

  1. Shop Drawings: Layout of fence and gates with dimensions, details and finishes of component accessories and post foundations.
  2. Product Data: Manufacturer’s catalog cuts indicating material compliance and specified options.
  3. Samples: Color selections for manufacturer's finishes.
  4. LEED Submittals
  5. Product Data for CreditMR4: For products having recycled content, manufacturer documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content.
  6. Include statement indicating costs for each product having recycled content.
  7. Product Data for Credit MR 5: For products and materials to comply with requirements for regional materials, provide documentation indicating location of product or material manufacturing location and the point of extraction, harvest, or recovery for each raw material.
  8. Include documentation on distance to project, contractor cost for each regional material, and percent by weight that is considered regional.
  9. Maintenance Data: Include the following in maintenance manuals:
  10. Gate operator.
  11. Record drawings at project closeout according to Division1 Section "Project Closeout."

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1MATERIALS

  1. Pickets: Square tubular members, ASTM A513, hot-rolled structural quality steel. 50,000 psi tensile strength, 60,000 psi yield strength. Minimum size 1 inch, having 16 gage ( 0.060 inch) wall thickness.
  2. Rails: “U” channels formed from ASTM A446 hot-rolled structural steel without pockets or shelves to hold water or moisture; 1-3/8 inches wide by 1-1/2 inches deep, 11 gauge (0.120 inches) wall thickness.
  3. Posts: Square tubular members, ASTM A500, hot-rolled structural quality steel, 50,000 psi. Tensile strength, 60,000 psi yield strength, with ASTM A525 hot-dipped galvanized G90 coating. Minimum size 2-1/2 inches, having 14 gage (0.080 inch) wall thickness.

2.2ACCESSORIES

  1. Rail Attachment Brackets: Die cast of zinc (ZAMAK #3 Alloy) per ASTM B86-83Z 33521. Ball and socket design capable of 30 degree swivel (up/down - left/right). Bracket to fully encapsulate rail end for complete security that is aesthetically pleasing.
  2. Fasteners: Industrial drive type rivets of sufficient length to attach items in a secure nonrattling position. Rivet to have a minimum of 1100 lbs. holding power and a shear strength of 1500 lbs.
  3. Ornamental Picket Fence Accessories: Provide indicated items required to complete fence system. Galvanize each ferrous metal item in accordance with ASTM B695 and finish to match framing.
  4. Post Caps: Formed steel, cast of malleable iron or aluminum alloy, weathertight closure cap. Provide one flat style post cap for each post.

2.3FABRICATION

  1. Fence Configuration:
  2. Basis-of-Design Product: The design is based on Monumental Iron Works, Estate A. Refer to accompanying drawings for additional information. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide either the named product or a comparable product by one of the following.
  3. Boundary Fence and Railing Systems
  4. Monumental Iron Works.
  5. Payne Metal Works, Inc.
  6. Ultra Aluminum Mfg., Inc.
  7. Approved substitute.
  8. Height: 8 feet.
  9. Gate Configuration:
  10. Basis-of-Design Product: The design is based on Monumental Iron Works, Estate Style A. Refer to accompanying drawings for additional information. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide either the named product or a comparable product by the fence manufacturer.
  11. Height: Same as fence.
  12. Opening: Clear opening shall be as indicated on the Drawings. Provide single or double gates at each opening as recommended by manufacturer.
  13. Space pickets 3-15/16 inches maximum face to face. Secure each picket to each rail. Punch rails to receive pickets and rivets and secure rails to rail brackets. Secure connections with industrial drive rivets.
  14. Picket Tops: Pressed steel point.
  15. Finish: After steel components have been galvanized, clean and prepare for finish coat. Apply minimum 2.5 mil thickness of baked powder coating finish. Color shall be black.

2.4SETTING MATERIAL

  1. Concrete: ASTM C94; 3000 PSI, 28-day strength concrete unless noted otherwise, slump of 4 inches +1 inch with air-entrainment of 6 percent +1 percent.
  2. Cement: ASTM C150, Type 1.
  3. Aggregates: ASTM C33 normal weight, natural coarse aggregate, maximum 1-1/2 inch size.
  4. Water: Potable.
  5. Flanged Posts: Provide flange type base plates with 4 holes for surface mounting of posts where indicated.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION

  1. Verify areas to receive fencing are completed to final grades and elevations.
  2. Ensure fence lines and boundaries of work are clearly established.

3.2INSTALLATION

  1. Install fence in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Space posts uniformly at 8'-0" nominal face to face unless otherwise indicated.
  3. Concrete Set Posts: Drill hole in firm, undisturbed or compacted soil. Holes shall have diameter 4 times greater than nominal outside dimension of post, and depths approximately 6 inches deeper than post bottom. Excavate deeper as required for adequate support in soft and loose soils, and for posts with heavy lateral loads. Set post bottom 36 inches below surface when in firm, undisturbed soil. Place concrete around post in a continuous pour. Trowel finish around posts and slope to direct water away from posts.
  4. Gate Posts and Hardware: Set keepers, stops, sleeves and other accessories into concrete.
  5. Check each post for vertical and top alignment, and maintain in position during placement and finishing operation.
  6. Align fence panels between posts. Firmly attach rail brackets to posts with 1/4 inches bolt and lock nut, ensuring panels and posts remain plumb.

3.3GATE INSTALLATION

  1. Install gates plumb, level and secure for full opening without interference.
  2. Attach hardware by means which will prevent unauthorized removal.
  3. Adjust hardware for smooth operation.

3.4ACCESSORIES

  1. Install post caps and other accessories to complete fence.

3.5CLEANING

  1. Clean up debris and unused material, and remove from site.
