Debating Gender Differences and Identities in
Muslim Countries

A workshop on peace culture and conflict resolution

Summer School 2002

Ahfad - Humboldt - Link Programme

24th June - 5th July, 2002
Dekanatssaal
Invalidenstrasse 42
Humboldt-University of Berlin
10099 Berlin - Mitte

The Summer School 2002, part of the link-programme between the Ahfad University for Women (Omdurman / Sudan) and Gender Studies at the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture at Humboldt University (Berlin) is designed to contribute to the dialogue of cultures. The core concept is to emphazise on differences and diversities in Muslim countries and to open the floor for an in-depth discussion on gender issues inside and outside these countries.
For the past few decades there is a lively discourse going on in these societies, debating the gender issue with different approaches. The Summer School will give an opportunity to broaden the discussion on women in the Muslim world. By listening to the gender debate within these societies and discussing the research work done so far on women and gender relations in Muslim countries, the mutual understanding can be improved.
In the first week, different country reports and comparative studies will be discussed, which will help to understanding the different positions and perceptions of the diverse realities. A set of recommendations and initiatives will be developed that will throw light on the path of future work.
The second week consists of a workshop where participants can contribute and report about their experiences in conflict transformation and resolution and take part in an intensive interaction and discussion about gender issues and peace culture.
