4.  Staffing & Patient Update

Patient numbers at BPMC have increased from c.14,500 to c.17,000 (these figures include the University). Approximately 800 of these have transferred to BPMC due to the closure of Mount St Surgery. There is likely to be a further increase due to the imminent opening of Earlsdon Retirement Village.

BPMC were negotiating for some time to provide an in-house Dermatology Service for the Hospital Trust which was due to start on 1st April 2015. On the strength of this a new GP was recruited (Dr Rachel Tindale who started in May 2015). Unfortunately the hospital/Trust pulled out of the negotiations. However, this new GP has assisted in meeting demand at the BPMC due to the increased number of patients. It is likely that another GP will be recruited in the autumn to assist further with the increase in numbers at the University. The practice will have a Locum GP at the University from April 16 2016. The patient panel asked how did the GPs cover at the University, the answer was that generally two sessions a day were provided in the term time and one session per day in vacation, plus Saturday mornings.

Dr Sayeda Shah (GP Registrar) passed her final GP exams at Christmas.

We now have a receptionist apprentice, Miss Preetal Radia. She works 32 hours per week and is paid at an hourly rate that is higher than the government guideline figure.

We have one nurse on long-term sick leave.

5.  Friends and Family

JM circulated the statistics for BPMC April to December 2015. 93% of patients surveyed said that they would recommend our practice to friends and family – a great result. (On the NHS Choices website in this category BPMC rates as 5-star and is labelled as ‘one of the best’)

JM has entered us into the Friends & Family competition.

6.  Annual Review of Complaints

The annual review for 2015 was discussed. (Last year there were 11 formal complaints 2 of which were from the University. This year there have been 3 at BPMC and none at the University. There were 15 informal complaints – 2 were regarding Medical Reports being behind, 6 were felt to be justified and were discussed.

7.  Latest National Patient Survey Results (www.gp-patient.co.uk)

JM presented the latest results for 2015 (published in January 2016). It was agreed that the results were excellent with 94% of respondents stating that they would recommend the practice to someone new to the area (CRCCG average 75% National average 78%) There were two areas where we were only average and they were waiting times and opening hours (equal to CCG% and National%). The panel asked about late opening hours which are on a Monday evening at BPMC and a Saturday morning at the University, all pre-booked appointments. Monday evenings can be booked on-line.

Coventry are piloting GP out of hours appointments using the King’s Fund – this is where we can share brief patient records with other Practices to enable patients to be seen elsewhere in the evenings. This is in the early stages and does not include BPMC yet.

DdR asked if we had noticed that patients seemed more reluctant to go to hospital. JM said that coincidentally the day after the Christmas Bank Holidays ambulances had been called to BPMC for four different patients. This could suggest that patients are avoiding going to hospital and choosing to wait until the GP Practice opens.

8.  Any Other Business

The seats in Reception are to be recovered during the next two months; the Reception walls were discussed as they were deemed too blank. Ideas discussed were to hang pictures, paint a mural, or get artwork from the end of year degree shows. The seats are differing heights to accommodate different leg length. JM has altered the music played. JM may change the phone message.

In answer to a question from a panel member JM reported that there is no sharing of information between the private sector and the NHS. ‘Care data’ was stopped but is being piloted elsewhere.

Review of Significant Events 2015 – Seven significant event meetings had taken place in 2015. These were discussed with the panel. Significant events are documented and minutes can be sent to the patient concerned where appropriate.

NHS Choices – JM recommends looking at this, comments can be added and statistics can be compared with other Practices. Enter post code to find Practice. (type into browser NHS Choices then click on GPs)

Patient Access On-Line – Driven by the Government. From 31 March 2016 patients can see Read-Coded information. DdR volunteered to look at once JM has discussed with the Partners.

JC informed the meeting that dementia patients have been moved from The Caludon Centre to Nuneaton and Warwick because the wards don’t meet current building regulations. A shuttle bus is provided.

JM to get up-dated phlebotomy list onto website, JC will provide.
