Thinkers, Contributors, Communicators

Dear parents of incoming and currentstudents to Rowland High School Room P-4,

My name is Ms.Okawa, and I will be yourchild’s teacher this year. I am excited that they will be in my class and look forward to getting to know each of them as we start our year together.

Our Classroom

Our classroom is a busy and active place of learning. We will follow the Rowland High School philosophy and standards of learning. Our classroom environment isengaging and is surrounded by a by a variety of hands-on learning activities. Subjects we will be covering for this school year include:

Functional Language Arts, Functional Math, Life Science, Vocational Training, Health, P.E.

Communication

I hope to maintain an open and ongoing dialogue with all parents so please feel free to contact me at anytime by email: , you can also call me at school: (626) 965-3448 ext. 3314 or on my cell phone: 626 533-0256. I will try to return your messages as soon as possible but because of the school schedule I may not be able to return calls until after school.

I have found that text messages are a quick and easy way to communicate short but needed information. If you prefer this methodplease send me a note allowing permission to text along with your cell phone number.

Classroom Behavior Plan

I realize that students may take time to adjust to their new environment. I will take this into consideration as your son or daughter begins to adjust to the new school year. However, if I feel that their behavior impedes their learning, I will contact you for suggestions and advice on how to better serve your student’s academic experience.

There may be times that students will be allowed to earn various rewards and/ or privileges through a token economy system. I feel this system helps students understand valuable concepts that connect with several of our learning goals in math and vocational studies.

Community Based Instruction (CBI)

Community Based Instruction is an important part of our curriculum. Students will learn valuable socialization skills as well as functional math, reading and communication skills. We will be traveling into the community and visiting various businesses. All excursions require walking and, at times, we will utilize public transportation. Permission slips will be sent usually two days prior to the CBI excursion, and should be completed signed and returned the following day. Typically, our CBI trips are on a Friday, so permission slips will be given out no later than Tuesday. Depending on the type of CBI a request for money will be stated. If your son or daughter would like to purchase something during one of our shopping excursions, please note that on the permission slip.

Homework

Homework will be assigned based on the ability of the student. Homework subjects are generally in the areas of math and language arts. Students will be assigned a homework packet on Monday and will turn their completed assignments by Friday. All work will be based on the student’s current ability and should be completed by the student independently. Homework that is not completed may be re-assigned or students may have to complete their work during their lunch hour.

Breakfast, Lunch, Snack

Free lunch is available to families that are eligible. Free lunch forms will be available through the district. Breakfast and lunch can be purchased at school. School menus can be viewed through the school website. Students are always welcome to bring their own breakfast, lunch or snack items. The class promotes healthy eating habits as part of the curriculum. Please consider healthy snack items and refrain from sending chips, cookies or candy.

Your child may bring in a water bottle each day and will be allowed to keep it at their desk to drink throughout the day. Bottled water is especially important on CBI activities.

Students will receive a monthly calendar to keep you informed of CBI excursions along with other school and classroom activities and schedules.

You will be notified if your child develops any difficulty conforming to classroom rules. Similarly, I hope that you will advise me if, at any time, your child has an academic, social, or emotional problem or concern. Should your child become discouraged or fearful about school, please communicate with me so that we can discover the cause and jointly come to some resolution.

I consider it a great privilege to be your child's teacher this year and look forward to meeting you on Back to School Night.

Our goals for this school year will be:

To look for opportunities to reward and praise students for their work and good behavior.

To not show favoritism, and to try to be fair to all.

 To make classroom instruction as interesting as possible and to look for new and diverse ways of presenting materials.

To maintain a positive atmosphere for learning.

To recognize the individuality of all students and will provide opportunities for each of them to experience success.

Sincerely,

June Okawa and Staff
