Friday Folder Letter
Dear Parents/Guardians, October 11, 2013
The students created a star for our character education unit. They explained why they are a star. All stars are displayed outside the cafeteria. After your child has a test or a quiz signed, if Mrs. Casal
doesn’t need to file it, she will sign and return it in the Friday folder. All papers that come home in the “Take Home”
pocket need to stay home. Otherwise, the weight of the extra papers will rip the Friday folder.
This week language arts has been all about wrapping up the old and bringing in the new. The students spent the first two days editing their personal narratives. On Wednesday, they were introduced to their fantasy reading books. We jumped back into writing on Thursday with our unit ending "On Demand." On Friday, the students began practicing close reading with their reading books.
Science has been focusing on engineering. We have had to create a solution to a problem, a falling i-phone. These young scientists have had to work independently before bringing their ideas into a group. There they have had to convince others of their ideas, working together to build the strongest solution possible. Building began on Friday for Mr. Blampey's class.
The students worked in groups during social studies to read paragraphs and use post-it notes to write the main idea. They wrote a summary about the four environments and the Inuit tribe. Next week, the classes will learn a few different strategies to use for studying for the upcoming test. Please take the time to ask your child how they can study for their social studies test. The students should refer to pages 11, 12, and 13 in their notebooks and the copied textbook pages. Next week, our archeologists will begin to dig in room 315 looking for artifacts!
Mrs. Casal taught the students how to draw arrays, write number models, write all the factors of numbers, and use the divisibility tests. Next week, the students will learn about prime and composite numbers, exponents, and greatest common factors and least common multiples. Please have your child study their division facts for at least 5 minutes each night. There are great, safe sites that are listed on our district webpage frsd.k12.nj.us.
Congrats to our Star Students for September: Laura Robinson and Emily Jensen. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email us at and .
Sincerely,
Mrs. Casal and Mr. Blampey
