Dear Parents/Carers

All year 10 pupils participate in a week of work experience. Routes H & S during the week beginning 11th July and Route G the week beginning the 18th July.

Your child has been given a Work Experience Choice sheet and an information booklet. Please could you have a look through these and familiarise yourself with how Work Experience is organised, when it takes place and what you and your child can do in order to get the most from this valuable learning experience.

All pupils will be placed in a relevant area from their 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice. If you have a specific employer/business in mind then placements can be organised by you or your child. I can then arrange for these ‘self placements’ to be health & safety checked and hopefully approved for use depending on insurance cover.

The approval of all self placements will depend on the necessary insurance being in place within the company and the successful completion of a routine health & safety visit. We can only carry out visits within the Bolton/Bury/Wigan area. If the placement you are hoping to arrange is out of this area then parents will be required to sign a disclaimer form accepting full responsibility for their child and to acknowledge they have been made aware that there is no insurance in place on behalf of the school. We strongly advise that this is avoided if at all possible.

All year 10 pupils are released from school for an afternoon, prior to the start of Work Experience to carry out a preliminary visit at their placement. This allows both pupils and employers the chance to discuss arrangements for the week and gives pupils the opportunity to complete the journey to the workplace before their work experience begins. A practice run before the day is an excellent way to ensure pupils are familiar with where they are going and how to get there.

When the pupil’s placements are confirmed please take a couple of minutes to search the internet to find out about the company your child has been placed with. Please also help your child to research journey times and routes. Pupils can also access IT facilities, at break, lunch and after school, to carry out any research if needed.

Please could you complete the Work Experience Choice sheet and return it to school before the 16th October.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have regarding Work Experience on 01204 572941 ext 315.

Yours faithfully
