Dear Parents,

We continually focus in on the quality of our programs and strive to provide the best educational experiences we can for all children. This month our focus will be on enriching both our dramatic play and private / cozy areas. You can help us enhance these areas by donating your gently used items to us.

Our classroom dramatic play areas are very important to your child’s development. These areas allow all children to experience the joy of pretend play, to try on new roles, to imitate what they’ve already experienced and to attempt to make sense of those things they don’t understand very well. Dramatic play also allows older preschoolers to practice cooperation in their pretend play, taking on complimentary roles. It’s well-proven that children who are successful in such play have a good chance for later success in school because their language and social skills are better developed than other children. To enhance our dramatic play areas, we want to add a variety of items and clothing appropriate for both males and females and deal with variety of diverse cultures. Below are some specific items that we would like to include:

Cooking Equipment:

  • small pots and pans
  • small plastic dishes
  • cooking tools (spatulas, whisks, blenders)
  • anything used in ethnic cooking (wok, tortilla warmer, chopsticks)

Clothing Items

  • Ethnic clothing articles
  • Job-related clothing (firefighters, construction, etc)
  • Female clothing (dresses, purses, shoes) & male clothing: ties, shoes, vests, suit coats
  • Fantasy play clothing: capes, masks, crowns, space helmets

Food items

  • Plastic food of all types—especially ethnic foods
  • Empty food containers and boxes (cereal and oatmeal boxes, butter tubs, etc.)
  • Menus from restaurants

Our cozy corners and the areas we set aside for privacy are equally important. Children need softness in their physical surroundings because it helps them relax, feel comfortable and provides them with a home-like atmosphere. The constant pressure of sharing toys, space and adult attention makes the need for private areas another critical component of an excellent program. You can assist us in enriching both these very necessary areas through your donations of soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, pillows, bean bags, couches), soft toys (stuffed animals, soft dolls, cloth puppets) and furniture built for one or two (small tables and chairs).

As you’re doing spring cleaning over the next few weeks, I hope you’ll consider donating your gently used items to our school. Thanks in advance for your continued support of all of our programs.

Sincerely,
