January 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians of Fifth Grade GT Students,

We are excited to invite you to our WAVE parent information nightonJanuary 19, 2017 at 6 pm in the LCIS commons.

WAVE is an exciting and challenging learning environment where like-minded, GT students have the opportunity to develop and flourish to their full potential. The following are components of WAVE that are designed to meet the needs of GT learners. These components are exclusive to the WAVE CCISD GT Magnet:

  • WAVE Basics – WAVE Basics is designed to bridge gifted students between elementary GT pullout and rigorous secondary GT academic studies and processes. The Basics class encourages and explores self-awareness of the unique social and emotional needs of GT students. This course is designed to give WAVE students skills for life-long GT learning and communicating.
  • GT Academic Courses – GT social studies, science, and language arts classes are open only to GT-identified students. Curricula are taught with a broad philosophic perspective rather than a basal knowledge approach. An emphasis is placed on real-world problem solving and product development. Math acceleration is also an option for those who qualify.
  • WAVE Mini-course – The WAVE Mini-course is a segment of the day in which students attend topical courses or develop independent study projects. They often participate in real-world endeavors and product development. The selection of courses varies according to student interest and/or availability of opportunities and instructors.
  • Texas GT State Certified Staff – In order for teachers to be assigned gifted children, the state requires basic GT awareness based on participation in 30-clock hours of workshops. WAVE staff members are required to obtain State Board of Education GT Certification. This certification consists of passing a state certification exam in gifted education. The WAVE staff also participates in advanced GT training that surpasses the state and district minimum requirements.

During this important event, we will share with you some of the features of WAVE and pass out the registration packets. Enclosed in the registration packetswill be the WAVE forms for the parents of 5th graders that have been identified asGT by CCISD and who are considering attending WAVE in the fall of 2017.

On Monday, January 23rdand Friday, January 27thfrom 8:30-10:30 am, we will offer parent tours of WAVE South at League City Intermediate. We would like to invite you to join us on the tours so you can experience WAVE first hand. RSVP forms for the tours will be available in the registration packets during the Parent Information Night.
