Dear MUN delegates and parents,

The busy time associated with the beginning of school is well under way! Along with the start of the academic year, the Model United Nations (MUN) program is preparing for another year of exciting conferences and classroom learning. I am Mr. John Remmell, the MUN coordinator. I would like to welcome back Mr. Stephen Schumacher who will be teaching our sophomore “MUNers” andMs. Lauren Brown who will be teaching the freshmenMUN classes this year. The 2010-2011school year finds the program attending the Royal Russell Conference in the United Kingdom, the BEIMUN conference in Beijing, China, the PAMUN conference in Paris, France, and the Duke Conference. SMCHS MUN has long been known for our exciting “travel” schedule and this year’s schedule is as ambitious as ever!

We will be holding the 19th Annual SOCOMUNconference here at SMCHS on Saturday, September 25th. We will host a large group of young delegates from over twentydifferent high schools. All SMCHS MUN students must be involved with this conference in some capacity. We are all excited about the positive feedback and support for this conference.

Accompanying this letter you will find a calendar of MUN events for the year. Let me alert everyone to the conference requirements for this year. (Please see attached) Santa Margarita will participate in nineteendifferent conferences during the year. It is important that you not schedule other activities such as retreats, SATs, etc. during weekends that are designated required conferences. Please make a note of weekends that your student is required to be in attendance at an MUN conference. Please remember that signing up to attend a conference is a commitment to attend that entire conference. Failure to fulfill that commitment will result in reduction of the student's academic grade and possibly other consequences at the MUN advisor's discretion. Participation in other activities (school or other) is not a valid excuse to miss a conference. Please make a note thatfinals will be the week after the Mission Viejo conference, and Winter Formal will be after the Laguna Hills conference.

In order to defer the expense of running the MUN program there is a $400 participation fee that must be paid at the beginning of the school year. This fee must be paid by check with the delegate’s name in the memo line. All checks for the year should be made out to “SMCHS MUN”. The check is to be given to your grade level MUN teacher. This will cover the cost of all local conferences. You will need to pay an additional fee for any “invitational” conferences your student may be invited to attend.

If you could fit some time into your busy schedule to help us we would greatly appreciate it. Attached is a list of areas that we anticipate the need for parent support. If you are interested and able to help, please mark which event(s) you can help with and return it to your student’s MUN teacher. In keeping with our school’s safe environment procedures, all volunteers need to go through a few steps. The first step is to complete an online training ( - “Recognize, Report and Prevent Child Abuse”) after which you should print the certificate and bring it to Mrs. Boscarini in the front office. Mrs. Boscarini will guide you through the rest of the process which involves a charge of $46 dollars to get fingerprinted at SMCHS Fridays from 1pm to 5pm.If there is anyone who would like to be a parent volunteer coordinator, please contact me directly. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

John Remmell

Missing a required MUN conference – It is best not to miss a conference for any reason. However, illness, injury, and other commitments do sometimes stand in the way of accomplishing this. If you must miss an MUN conference you should get your MUN teacher’s PERMISSION before signups for that conference. Your MUN teacher must give his/her permission for you to miss the conference. If this permission is given then you must do all of the required class work for the conference that you miss (write the papers, participate in roasts, etc.) You must attend another “make up” conference to take the place of the conference you missed. If you will only have to miss one day of a multi-day conference you must attend the day(s) you can make the conference, and also complete a makeup conference. You must arrange with your teacher beforehand what conference you will attend as a makeup. You will be required to pay an extra fee for this conference. You will also be required to complete any papers, etc. that this additional conference requires. You must attend the entire make up conference even if it is longer than the one that you missed. You may not use “Head Delegate” or any “invitational” conferences in the place of required conferences. Those are considered privileges and should not be used as a “way out” of a required conference. If a student misses a required conference and does not complete a makeup conference their academic grade will be penalized. The penalty will be determined by their MUN teacher and may be a zero. Students that miss a required conference are not eligible to letter in MUN even if they attend a makeup conference. Students that wait until late in the school year to recognize schedule conflicts may have no makeup conference available and may have to accept a zero for the MUN conference that they miss. This is also true for students that may miss more than one MUN conference. Students that miss more than one required MUN conference during a school year will not be eligible to enroll in MUN the following school year.

* SOCOMUN – all students must participate in the SOCOMUN conference. Students that are not delegates or members of the secretariat must attend an extra conference during the year in addition to the required conferences for their grade level. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the student being ineligible to participate in MUN.
