Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to hand stitch material; sew by hand; and finish rope work.

Explanatory notes

1Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 1

Prepare to hand stitch material.

Evidence requirements

1.1Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

1.2Material to be stitched is identified in accordance with customer and company requirements.

1.3Tools and equipment are selected and used in accordance with the manufacturer specifications and company requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – sewing palms, needle types and sizes, thread types and sizes, bees wax, bench hook, cutting tools, awl types.

1.4Work area is prepared in accordance with company requirements.

Outcome 2

Sew by hand.

Evidence requirements

2.1Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

2.2Sewing palm, needle, and thread are used to sew product to company requirements of speed, accuracy and finish.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – seaming, hemming, darning, grommets, eyelet, rope edges, skipped stitches, finishing work, attachments, corners, pockets, tapes, patches, damage; round seam, flat seam, flat felled; straight, zigzag, round hand.

2.3Work is checked in accordance with company requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – quality, part missed, rework, product labelled.

2.4Work area is cleaned and tools and equipment are cleaned and put in their places in accordance with company requirements.

Outcome 3

Finish rope work.

Evidence requirements

3.1Ropes are cut to length with splicing and finishing allowance in accordance with company requirements.

3.2Rope ends are finished in accordance with company requirements.

Rangewhipping, crown knot, crimping.

3.3Ropes are spliced in accordance with job specifications and company requirements.

Rangeeye splice, crimped eye, short splice, long splice, tapered splice.

3.4Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.
