Worcester & Hereford Branch are delighted to invite you to attend our Rookie Lifeguard Festival that is being held on Monday 11th July 2016 between 6pm and 8pm at Droitwich Spa Lido.
This Festival is a perfect opportunity for Rookies to test their Lifesaving skills in a fun and competitive environment. Rookies can enter teams of six into the following age categories of under 11s and under 14s (mixed gender).
Enclosed with this booklet is a programme for the Festival, event descriptions and an entry form.
The entry fee is £10 per team, please make cheques payable to RLSS Worcester and Hereford. The entry cost includes:

We appreciate any help we can get at our Rookie Festival, please inform us if you are able to provide volunteers (marshals, timekeepers, recorders etc.).
Our Rookie Festival is jam packed with lots of fun events and requires lots of equipment. We would be grateful if you are able to provide any of the following equipment:
Sinkable hoops
Rescue pool manikins
Clothing suitable to go in the pool (shirts, trousers, hats, scarves, jumpers and shoes)
Rookie body boards
CPR manikins for dry side

RACE DESCRIPTIONS
RACE 1 – OBSTACLE RELAY
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Rookies 1, 3 and 5 will start in the pool, with Rookies 2, 4 and 6 at the other end of the pool also in the water. Rookie 1 starts holding the pool wall, on the start Rookie 1 swims the width of the pool, swimming through a sunken hoop placed in the centre of the lane. Once Rookie 1 has touched the pool wall, Rookie 2 swims the width of the pool, passing through the hoop. Once Rookie 2 has touched the pool wall, Rookie 3 swims the width of the pool, passing through the hoop. Once Rookie 3 has touched the pool wall, Rookie 4 swims the width of the pool, passing through the hoop. Once Rookie 4 has touched the pool wall, Rookie 5 swims the width of the pool, passing through the hoop. Once Rookie 5 has touched the pool wall, Rookie 6 swims the width of the pool, passing through the hoop.
The race finishes when Rookie 6 touches the finishing wall.
PENALTIES
10 seconds for each infringement:
False start.
Faulty take-over, i.e. not touching the wall.
Not surfacing before and after the obstacle.
Failing to pass through obstacle (sunken hoop).
RACE 2 – DRESS THE MANIKIN
EVENT DESCRIPTION
All 6 Rookies will start the race on one side of the pool. On the opposite side will be an orange pool manikin. Each Rookie will be responsible for one item of clothing (shirt, trousers, hat, scarf, jumper and shoes). Rookie 1 enters the pool (any entry permitted) swims across to the opposite side, climbs out and puts their item of clothing on the manikin. The clothing must be placed properly on the manikin i.e. a hat must be placed on the manikin’s head, the trousers must be put on the bottom of the manikin etc. Rookie 1 then swims back across the pool, touches the pool wall, and then Rookie 2 may enter.
Rookie 2 swims the width of the pool, climbs out at the opposite side, places their item of clothing on the manikin, swims back, and touches the pool wall.Then, Rookie 3 swims the width of the pool, climbs out at the opposite side, places their item of clothing on the manikin, swims back, and touches the pool wall. Then, Rookie 4 swims the width of the pool, climbs out at the opposite side, places their item of clothing on the manikin, swims back, and touches the pool wall. Then, Rookie 5 swims the width of the pool, climbs out at the opposite side, places their item of clothing on the manikin, swims back, and touches the pool wall. Then, Rookie 6 swims the width of the pool, climbs out at the opposite side, places their item of clothing on the manikin, swims back, and touches the pool wall.
The race finishes when Rookie 6 touches the finishing wall.
PENALTIES
10 seconds for each infringement:
False start.
Faulty take-over, i.e. not touching the wall.
Not placing clothing properly on the manikin.
Not climbing out of the water to put the clothing on the manikin.
RACE 3 – BODY BOARD RELAY
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Rookie 1 starts in the pool one end with Rookies 3 and 5 waiting on pool side, Rookie 2 also starts in the water at the opposite end, with Rookies 4 and 6 waiting on the pool side.
Rookie 1 starts holding the body board and touching the pool side. At the start Rookie 1 paddles the body board the width of the pool, touches the pool wall and passes the board to Rookie 2 who paddles the width of the pool. On reaching and touching the pool wall the board is passed to Rookie 3 who paddles the width of the pool. On reaching and touching the pool wall the board is passed to Rookie 4 who paddles the width of the pool. On reaching and touching the pool wall the board is passed to Rookie 5 who paddles the width of the pool. On reaching and touching the pool wall the board is passed to Rookie 6 who paddles the width of the pool to the finish.
Race finishes when Rookie 6 touches the finishing wall.
PENALTIES
10 seconds for each infringement:
False start.
Faulty take-over.
Throwing the board.
POINTS
1st place = 10 points
2nd place = 8 points
3rd place = 6 points
4th place = 4 points
5th place = 2 points
CPR CHALLENGE
This is designed to get parents involved with their child while also spreading knowledge. Rookies will work together to teach adult CPR to parents/carers in just 10 minutes. One Rookie and one parent will then be asked to represent each team at the end of the event and demonstrate their CPR skills. The team will earn points depending on how good the CPR is! The marking scheme is shown below. The parent and Rookie will each be marked out of ten. One mark is given for accomplishing each step, so in total 20 points are available for each team.
